ROBERTA B.
ABRAMS 72, of
Farmington Hills,
died Dec. 7, 2009.
She is survived
by her daughter
and son-in-law,
Susan and Douglas
Abrams
Federman of
Sylvania, Ohio; son and daughter-in-
law, David and Amanda Abrams of
San Marino, Calif.; brother and sister-
in-law, Dr. Stephen and Sylvia Busky of
Baltimore, Md.; grandchildren, Naomi,
Sara, Samuel, Rachel, Miriam, Aaron
Jacob, Daniel and Allison; devoted
friend, Marilyn Harton.
Mrs. Abrams was the dear sister of
the late Stephanie Wisch.

DR. GERALD APTEKAR, 90, for-
mer Detroiter, died Nov. 23, 2009,
peacefully at the Jewish Home in San
Francisco.
His optimistic disposition made
him an inspiration and a joy to be
with. He loved people and they found
him interesting and full of adventure.
He traveled widely, including an expe-
dition to Cameroon and a dental mis-
sion to Guatemala.
Born and raised in Detroit, he had
a successful career as a dentist and
orthodontist until his retirement in
1982. He moved to Scottsdale, Ariz.,
with Jane, his wife of 68 years, until
this April, when they came to the Bay
Area to be near family.
Dr. Aptekar was a graduate of the
University of Michigan Dental School,
where he also taught. He married his
college sweetheart, Jane Schkloven, on
April 16,1941.
He served in the military as a den-
tist, caring for soldiers and interned
Japanese citizens. He had an enthusias-
tic joie de vivre that led him to collect
African art, antique cars and modern
sculpture. He loved to cook, travel, drink
fine wine and play tennis and golf.
Dr. Aptekar is survived by his family,
to whom he was intensely commit-
ted: his wife, Jane Aptekar; his sons,
Donald (Harriet Moyer) of Denver,
Colo.; Robert (Judy) of Los Altos Hills,
Calif.; grandchildren, Joanna (Jason)
Strober, Denise Aptekar, Rebecca Klein
(Russell), Jacob and Noah Aptekar;
great-grandchildren, Sarah, Jared and
Ari Strober and A.J. and Ella Klein.
He was predeceased by his two
siblings, Milton Aptekar and Bea
Denhoffer, who also lived into their 90s.

EDITH BARIL, 84, of Scottsdale, Ariz.,
died Dec. 10, 2009.
She is survived by her beloved
husband, Norman Baril; children,

Farmington Hills, Roy and Elena Baril

ing nieces, nephews, other family mem-
bers and friends.
Mrs. Baril was the dear sister of
the late Lillian, the late Sarah, the
late Harold, the late Sam and the late
Pauline.

DR. CLAIRE ANN
SLATKIN PATT
COLMAN, 63, of
Bloomfield Hills,
died Dec. 10, 2009.
A child psychiatrist,
she was a cham-
pion of women's
Colman
rights and human
rights. She revived the Birmingham
Bloomfield Democratic Club, which is
vibrant today. She was involved with
NOW Southeastern Michigan Chapter
and helped produce the newsletters for
NOW and WAND-Women's Actions for
New Directions. She was well-known
statewide in Democratic politics and was
insturmental in the election of U.S. Rep.
Gary Peters, D-West Bloomfield.
Dr. Colman is survived by her
husband, Dr. Michael Colman; sons
and daughter-in-law, Joseph Patt and
Christy Silvester of New York, Brian
Patt of Massachusetts; granddaughter,
Isadora Maxine Silvester; brother and
sister-in-law, David and Judy Slatkin
of Illinois; sisters-in-law and brothers-
in-law, Roberta Patt, Luana Kyselka,
Michael Patt, Judee Herman, Sal
Herman and Carol Pine; nieces, neph-
ews, great-nieces and great-nephews,
cousins, other relatives and comrades.
She was the beloved wife of the late
Dr. David Jeremy Patt; the cherished
daughter of the late Max and the late
