An Education, a British film sched-
430 uled to open Nov. 13 in Detroit, has
received good reviews virtually

across the board, with lead actress
W
Carey Mulligan, 24, talked about as
a shoo-in for a best actress Oscar
nomination.
The film is based on a bestselling
memoir by English reporter Lynn
Barber, who at age 16 dated and
nearly married a Jewish white-col-
lar crook in his 30s (played in the
film by Peter Sarsgaard). The flick
shows all the characters' flaws and
highlights the anti-Semitism found
just under the surface everywhere
in British society in the early 1960s.
Director Roland Emmerich's new
big budget flick, 2012, also open-
ing Nov. 13, has virtually all life
on Earth threatened with extinc-
tion by huge simultaneous natural
disasters. The title references an
ancient Mayan prediction of great
disaster in the year 2012.
John Cusack stars as
a sci-fi writer who tries
to escape, with his ex-
wife (Amanda Peet, 37)
and their children, to

Follies, Coriolanus, The Importance of
Being Earnest, The Clean House and
Romeo and Juliet.

The History Channel's five-part WWII
in HD, airing 9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday,
Nov.15-19, is an interesting hybrid of
feature film and documentary based
on the memoirs of 12 real World War
II veterans. Their stories are told
through narration and actual World
War II footage, much of it rarely seen
color footage.
One of the real veterans is Jack
Werner, an Austrian Jew who fled
Nazism, settled in the States and
served in the U.S. Army. Werner's
memories are mostly voiced by
West Bloomfield-raised actor
Justin Bartha (National Treasure,
The Hangover), who worked with a
voice coach to perfect his Austrian
accent.
Gina Gershon, 48, is
the star of the Lifetime
Movie Network mini-
series Everything She
Ever Wanted, airing
8 p.m. Saturday and
Sunday, Nov.14-15.
Gershon plays an
