here's some new leadership at
the top of the Michigan Jewish
Sports Foundation.
The husband-and-wife team
of David and Hedy Blatt has been
named executive director and commu-
nications and events director, respec-
tively, for the philanthropic organiza-
tion that is in the charge of two iconic
events in the Jewish community:
the Hank Greenberg Memorial Golf
Invitational and the Michigan Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame dinner.
David Blatt, 64, has been a member
of the foundation's board of directors
for 10 years. He served on the com-
mittee that chose previous executive
director Laura Stern, who resigned in

December for personal
reasons.
"It's been a smooth
transition," said Blatt,
who has been busy net-
working and doing other
startup duties since
being named executive
David Blatt
director in February.
He and his wife's
first major undertaking is organizing
the 19th annual Greenberg golf out-
ing, scheduled for June 15 at Tam
O'Shanter Country Club in West
Bloomfield. Baseball great Cal Ripken
Jr. will receive the Hank Greenberg
Memorial Award.
Foundation President Dan Passman
is happy Blatt has expanded his role in
the foundation.
"David's commitment and dedica-
tion to growing and strengthening

our organization
is outstanding,"
Passman said.
David and Hedy
have been married
for 41 years. They
have two children
and two grandchil-
Hedy Blatt
dren.
He has been in
the mortgage business for more than
20 years.
He's president of Blatt Financial in
Bingham Farms.
Hedy Blatt served as director of fine
arts for 20 years and director of com-
munity relations for 12 years in the
Troy School District, overlapping the
jobs.
She's now an independent fine
arts consultant with the Oakland
Intermediate School District.

from a herniated disc that required
traction and epidural injections.
The 2000 Birmingham Groves High
grad and partner Tanith Belbin haven't
competed since December. They
missed the U.S. figure skating cham-
pionships in January and saw their
streak of five titles come to an end.
They hope to be in the world cham-
pionships this month in Los Angeles.

More than 2,000 applicants from
across the state competed for
a Michigan High School Athletic
Association Scholar-Athlete Award.
Only 32 were chosen for the $1,000
scholarship, including 13 from Class A
schools. One was Berkley High School
senior Michelle Lapin.
The 17-year-old Huntington Woods
resident is a cross country and track
standout at Berkley, and a co-founder of
the school's figure skating club team.
Aside from sports, Lapin plays alto
sax in the Berkley marching and sym-
phonic bands, she's
been honored by the
Royal Oak Optimist
Club, and she's served
as president of the
Gittleman BBG chap-
ter in the B'nai B'rith
Youth Organization.
She plans to attend
Michelle Lapin
the University of
Michigan.
In her essay about sportsmanship
for the Scholar-Athlete Award, Lapin
described incidents of good and poor
sportsmanship between boys and girls
during 3,200-meter races in track.
Lapin and the other 31 winners will
be honored during halftime of the
Class C boys basketball champion-
ship game Saturday in East Lansing.
