HEALTH & FITNESS sports Foundation Duo Husband and wife to lead MJSF. Steve Stein Special to the Jewish News I here's some new leadership at the top of the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation. The husband-and-wife team of David and Hedy Blatt has been named executive director and commu- nications and events director, respec- tively, for the philanthropic organiza- tion that is in the charge of two iconic events in the Jewish community: the Hank Greenberg Memorial Golf Invitational and the Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame dinner. David Blatt, 64, has been a member of the foundation's board of directors for 10 years. He served on the com- mittee that chose previous executive director Laura Stern, who resigned in December for personal reasons. "It's been a smooth transition," said Blatt, who has been busy net- working and doing other startup duties since being named executive David Blatt director in February. He and his wife's first major undertaking is organizing the 19th annual Greenberg golf out- ing, scheduled for June 15 at Tam O'Shanter Country Club in West Bloomfield. Baseball great Cal Ripken Jr. will receive the Hank Greenberg Memorial Award. Foundation President Dan Passman is happy Blatt has expanded his role in the foundation. "David's commitment and dedica- tion to growing and strengthening our organization is outstanding," Passman said. David and Hedy have been married for 41 years. They have two children and two grandchil- Hedy Blatt dren. He has been in the mortgage business for more than 20 years. He's president of Blatt Financial in Bingham Farms. Hedy Blatt served as director of fine arts for 20 years and director of com- munity relations for 12 years in the Troy School District, overlapping the jobs. Only 32 were chosen for the $1,000 scholarship, including 13 from Class A schools. One was Berkley High School senior Michelle Lapin. The 17-year-old Huntington Woods resident is a cross country and track standout at Berkley, and a co-founder of the school's figure skating club team. Aside from sports, Lapin plays alto sax in the Berkley marching and sym- phonic bands, she's been honored by the Royal Oak Optimist Club, and she's served as president of the Gittleman BBG chap- ter in the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization. She plans to attend Michelle Lapin the University of Michigan. In her essay about sportsmanship for the Scholar-Athlete Award, Lapin described incidents of good and poor sportsmanship between boys and girls during 3,200-meter races in track. Lapin and the other 31 winners will be honored during halftime of the Class C boys basketball champion- ship game Saturday in East Lansing.
