Memorial Day service brings war veterans together.
ewish war veterans from Michigan, Canada and Russia,
looking grand in their respective uniforms, gathered
with friends, family and ladies auxiliary members
at Machpelah Cemetery in Ferndale Sunday for their annual
International Memorial Day service.
Amid bright sunshine, Rabbi Herbert Yoskowitz of Adat
Shalom Synagogue in Farmington Hills, who is a Jewish War
Veterans chaplain, led a service for about 70 participants to
remember Jewish veterans of various wars, including those in
Israel. Yoskowitz has conducted this service for 14 years.
"I am a veteran myself and it's a gift to be able to defend
one's country," he said. "How can we not remember those who
helped defend what our country is and strives to be?"
Buglers from Ferndale High School as well as Ben Duchan, 16,
of Huntington Woods sounded taps. Members of the Boy Scouts
of America's local Venturing Crew 18 also took part.
Additional services were held at Hebrew Memorial Park in Mt.
Clemens later on Sunday. Members from the Michigan Jewish
War Veterans, the Royal Canadian Legion and the Russian War
Veterans were urged to take part in the Ferndale Memorial Day
parade on Monday. LI
