DANCERS DIVERSE Some 25 dancers, representing classic and pop stages,
showcase their talents in the National City Stars of Ballet & Broadway (above)
at the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts in Detroit. Two performances
— at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 18-19 — bring together pros who
have appeared with prestigious ballet companies and musical theater troupes.
Performers from the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and the
Joffrey will present segments from their traditional repertoire. Theater notables
will present the choreography of Sweet Charity, The Color Purple and Chicago,
while the Movin' Out Band provides the melodies. After the Friday program,
members of the audience can show their own ballroom talents during a gala at
the Roostertail, where local dancers also will appear. $150 for the show and gala;
$19.50-$75 for the show only. (313) 887-8510.

FLAT-OUT TRAVELER Ten-year-old Stanley falls victim to a terrible accident
one night — his bedroom bulletin board falls on him while he's sleeping, and he
wakes up perfectly flat. Stanley, a good-natured kid, finds plusses in the change
that has happened. He can slide under locked doors, fly like a kite and always
wins at hide-and-seek. But his practical side tells him that he can't get along
being flat forever, so he decides to search the world for a solution. He puts him-
self in an envelope, travels the world as a human letter and meets up with many
surprises. This family story is told on stage in The Musical Adventures of Flat
Stanley, performed at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, at the Cobb Great Hall in the
Wharton Center for the Performing Arts in East Lansing. The show is adapted
from the books by Jeff Brown. $10-$20. (800) WHARTON.

PRE-SEASON FESTIVITIES It's not quite time for Michigan's statewide out-
door festivals filled with art, entertainment, activities and food, but there is a full-
fledged event being held inside at the Costick Center in Farmington Hills. The
12th-annual Festival of the Arts runs Wednesday-Sunday, April 23-27. Special
activities include Art After Dark, a Friday wine-tasting preview, and Starry
Night Gala, a Saturday dinner party. The Family Festival Day on Sunday show-
cases more than 200 paintings (like this one, right, by former artist-in-residence
Donna Vogelheim) by members of the Farmington Artist Club with items both
on exhibit and for sale. Community displays enhance the free Sunday fair, where
there will be hands-on art experiences and demonstrations. (248) 473-1870.
