ugly head. It wasn't that much better
in Paris. My father died six months
after my brother was killed in an auto-
mobile accident, and that seemed to
take much of the religion out of my
mother and myself."
Uzan entered college at 16 and
became one of the youngest students
ever to achieve a doctorate in France.
He pursued both French literature and
theatrical studies at Paris University.
Uzan launched an acting career —
specializing in Moliere plays — that
carried over when he and his mother
moved to Boston in 1972. He taught
at several colleges and organized the
French Theater of America, sometimes
performing 200 roles a year. He also
published and translated French aca-
demic books into English.
"I directed my first opera — before
I ever attended one — for Opera
Boston in 1981," says Uzan. "The direc-
tor knew my acting and asked me to
direct the dialogue scenes in Faust.
Then she became ill, and I ended up
directing the entire opera. I fell in
love with opera, and I learned to read
music. I'm not a great musician, but I
can follow a score."
Uzan travels the U.S. directing

operas in various cities — with at
least one each year for MOT. He spent
five years as artistic director at f Opera
de Montreal, maintaining an apart-
ment in the Canadian city, although
he lives in Englewood, N.J., with his
wife, Diana Soveiro, a singer. He also
has a Manhattan apartment where
he and his daughter, Vanessa, operate
Pinnacle Arts Management, manag-
ing about 80 singers, conductors and
directors.
The Cyrano cast features Romanian
baritone Marian Pop in the title role,
American soprano Leah Partridge as
Roxane, Jose Luis Sola as Christian,
Peter Volpe as DeGuiche, Mark
Panuccio as Ragueneau, Gloria Parker
as the Duenna, Gaetan Lapperiere as
Lebret, Daniel Okulitch in the dual
roles of Carbon and Inconnu, and
Torrance Blaisdell in the roles of the
Capucin and the Marquis de Cuigy.
Mark D. Flint, who has created the
70-piece orchestration, will conduct;
Suzanne Mallare Acton prepared the
48-member Michigan Opera Theatre
Chorus. Set and costume designs are
by John Pascoe. Jewish stage manager
Ken Saltzman also returns to MOT for
this production.

Cyrano opens MOT's fall opera season 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the
Detroit Opera House, 1526 Broadway at Grand Circus Park, in downtown
