T

his is the kind of comedian
Jeff Garlin is. He knows the
punch line, but he let's you
finish the joke anyway.
It's the one about a man who goes to
a doctor to complain about his depres-
sion. He can't get anything done; he
just sits around and mopes all day
long.
The doctor tells him, "You're are in
luck. Grimaldi the famous clown is in
town. Go see Grimaldi. He'll cheer you
up.
"But doctor;' the patient responds, "I
am Grimaldi."
Garlin listens patiently and says he
doesn't know the origins of the joke.
"I think it was somewhere in South
America. But I tell it using Cocoa the
Clown. That's my all-time favorite joke,
and I think on a lot of levels that joke
is true for me.
"I'm a Jewish comedian. I am full of
neuroses. I'm a morning person, but
there are days when I want to keep the
shade down."
Despite these neuroses or perhaps
because of them, Garlin, 45, has built a

reputation as a comedian's comedian,
someone who adds value to any proj-
ect he's associated with. It's why com-
ics as diverse as Denis Leary and Jon
Stewart have asked him to direct their
comedy specials. It is why Larry David
has given Garlin executive producer
credit on the HBO hit show Curb Your
Enthusiasm, a show that Garlin helped
develop and on which he plays Larry's
agent.
But now Garlin is out on a creative
limb pretty much on his own. He has
written, produced, directed and stars
in I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With,
a humorous and poignant movie about
a Chicago actor who wants only three
things: someone to love him, a great
part and to lose weight. It is scheduled
to open Friday, Oct. 5, at the Landmark
Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak.
Though Garlin has performed
stand-up on his own and been naked
(figuratively, thank goodness) in front
of live audiences, he has spent most of
his time in supporting roles, propping
up the work of others. "Everything I
do I try to make the other person look
good;' he says.
But with this film, everything rests
on Garlin's shoulders alone. It's all his
