Every so often, Walters takes a

Special to the Jewish News
oel Epstein, in his third
year of working on the
Woodward Dream Cruise,
has been named this year's execu-
tive director.
Epstein, 51, is responsible for
managing finances, negotiating
contracts, merchandising, market-
ing and handling public relations.
He reports to the board of direc-
tors representing the communities
that host the annual event.
"I've been working on Dream
Cruise public relations for the past
two years, and I was pleased that
we could bring in national televi-
sion coverage last year," says
Epstein, an account supervisor
for Marx Layne & Company, which
oversees the auto parade and
associated activities.
"We're hoping to make this an
event that can be a strong tourist
attraction. It's the largest classic
car show."
The event, which is free to
spectators while offering food
and other priced concession
items, is being reorganized with
the idea of raising funds for the
sponsoring communities: Berkley,
Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills,
Bloomfield Township, Ferndale,
Huntington Woods, Pleasant
Ridge, Pontiac and Royal Oak.
"I've put together an advisory
board to help cities find ways to
pay for police and sanitation,"

Joel Epstein: Promoting a "national
tourist attraction."
says Epstein, a Pontiac resident.
An important part of this year's
program is promoting authentic
T-shirts and other logo items that
help meet the costs of Dream
Cruise activities. Profits from
knock-off articles go directly to
the vendors selling them.
Epstein, a member of the Jewish
Community Center, is a single
dad who has worked with Marx
Layne for seven years. He grew up
in Chicago, majored in sociology
and English at the University of
Colorado and worked as a sports
announcer before beginning a pub-
lic relations career.
Before moving to Michigan
15 years ago, Epstein lived in
California. The decision to locate
to this area was made to be close
to family.
"The Dream Cruise is a very
important representation of this
region's heritage," Epstein says.
"I'm hoping this year's events help
give it more attention and finan-
cial support."
