ceilings, not a traditional kind of place,
and my art is all over. I'll never be able
to sell my house because I don't know
anyone who would buy it."
Goldman, who is still single (but has
a girlfriend), may be a creative artist
first and foremost, but he has become
a smart businessman in the past few
years. He invests his money in real
estate and art, and insists, "I don't
party." He likes sports, but he's not a
fanatic. He doesn't watch television, he
says, "and I don't read anything like
How To Train Your Dog or self-help
books."
He just paints, thinks up cartoons
and writes scripts for The Uglies (pro-
duced by Ashton Kutcher's company
Katalyst), working until he's sure it's
funny. And how does he know when
something's funny?
"Women's intuition."

Elizabeth Applebaum is a marketing spe-

cialist at the Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit.

An exhibit and sale of Todd
Goldman's art takes place Aug.
23-Oct. 7 at the Janice Charach
Epstein Gallery, located in the
D. Dan & Betty Kahn Jewish
Community Center, 6600 W.
Maple Road, in West Bloomfield.
Goldman will speak briefly and
sign autographs for the open-
ing at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug.
23. The event is free and open
to the public. Gallery hours
are noon-4 p.m. Sundays,10-5
p.m. Mondays-Wednesdays and
10-7 p.m. Thursdays. (248) 432-
5448.

art in his paintings.
Several months ago Goldman did
settle one lawsuit, involving cartoon-
ist Dave Kelly, about which he says, "I
made a mistake and I'm sorry. I paid
the artist and now it's over and I've
moved on."
As to comments from bloggers, "I
could not care less:' he says. "I own a
copyright on all my material, and I'm
not even going to talk about these guys."
"I get a lot of criticism:' Goldman
says. "My style is simple, and a lot of
artists who are classically trained can't
even get their work in a gallery — and
they're way better than I am. They
look at my stuff and say, `A 4-year-old
can do this.'"
Brushing all the criticism aside
— "It's free press for me:' he says
— Goldman refuses to take himself
seriously, and he's quick and feisty
with answers to questions on every
subject, popping out comments on this
and that, not unlike the pingpong balls
going off in his head, which is how he
describes his creative process.
"I've got more ideas than I know
what to do with:' he says. So he car-
ries a pencil and notebook ("a doodly
pad," he calls it) all the time so he can
outline new projects, his latest being
scripts for The Uglies show, "the ugli-
est family in the world. But they don't
know it."
In 2005, Goldman expanded his line
to include the book Boys Are Stupid,
Throw Rocks at Them. Random House
will publish his second book, The Zoo
I Drew, in the spring.
Goldman also paints non-stop.
His home, a Spanish-style house in
Florida, is filled top to bottom with
art. "It's got cement floors and 25-foot

show they'll ever have on Earth."
He has been working "fast
and intensely for the past three
months,12-15 hours a day," he
says, sometimes driving "all over
the state of Michigan searching
for particular pigments. And I was
on the phone with a paint compa-
ny every week," trying to remedy
a color problem.
Despite such challenges, Jonas
loves his work and believes
that his paintings, the fusion of
geometry and artistic design, will
always be of interest.
"It can be a struggle, but it's

all about the art," he says. Stay
focused, work hard, create and
you will find an audience. "If
you make it," he says, "they will
come."

"Franklin Jonas: Geostructure
Series" runs Aug. 23-Oct. 7
at the Janice Charach Epstein
Gallery in the West Bloomfield
Jewish Community Center.
Jonas appears at the open-
ing reception at 6:30 p.m.
Thursday, Aug. 23.
