FINE CHINESE DINING

'A wonderful adventure in fine dining" - Danny Raskin

Special to the Jewish News
ake an inflexible, precise
concept: a mathematical
equation with only one
correct answer. Then place it in
a totally subjective world, one of
imagination and creativity, filled
with dazzling color and wild imag-
es and never-ending possibility.
Welcome to the world of
Franklin Jonas.
Jonas, of Bloomfield Hills, has
created a "Geostructure Series"
uniting mathematical designs with
intense oranges and blues and
yellows, a curious juxtaposition
that Jonas likes because "math is
perfect, but you pull it into the art
realm and it becomes imperfect."
The "Geostructure Series" will
be on display Aug. 23-Oct. 7 on
the upper level of the Janice
Charach Epstein Gallery in the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield. The opening reception
will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug.
23. The public is invited at no
charge.
"I saw an exhibit of Frank's
about 10 years ago," says gallery
director Terri Stearn. "At first
glance I loved his work, which
reminded me of [op-art artist
Victor] Vasarely. So much of his
heart and soul goes into those
paintings. I have never seen that
so apparent in any artist before."
Jonas, who was born in Royal
Oak, was 16 when his first exhibit,
"Shapes on Canvas," opened
at Pickering College in Ontario,
where Jonas was a student and
spent most of his class time
drawing. He later attended the
Pratt Institute of Art and Design
in New York then worked in the
film industry in Hollywood. He
returned to Michigan in 1995 and
rented a studio in Pontiac, where
he began the "Geostructure
Series."
The Janice Charach Epstein
Gallery exhibit marks Jonas' first
show in 10 years (he has been
working on another project involv-
ing art and computers) and com-
prises some of the artist's earlier
paintings, along with new cre-
ations based on previous designs.
He takes exhibits very seriously.
Artists, Jonas explains, often feel
as though they must "put every-
thing they've got into [a show],
as though it's going to be the last
