Karmanos Honorees
The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Institute's Dr. Jeffrey Forman and his
wife, Miriam, will be honored for their
philanthropy and commitment in the
fight against cancer.
They will be recognized at the
Karmanos Cancer Institute's 14th
annual Partners Events, which include
the Partners Annual Golf Classic on
Monday, Aug. 27, at Franklin Hills
Country Club and the Partners Night
on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Museum of
Contemporary Art Detroit.
Dr. Forman received Karmanos'
Partners honor in 1995, making him
the first person ever to receive this rec-
ognition twice.
Dr. Forman is a recognized expert
in prostate cancer. He has served
as medical director for Karmanos
Cancer Institute's Lawrence and Idell
Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center in
Farmington Hills since 2001 and con-
tinues to serve patients at that loca-
tion and at the Gershenson Radiation
Oncology Center on Karmanos' main
campus in Detroit.
He is medical director for 21st
Century Oncology at Karmanos' eight
sites in southeast Michigan and is on
the faculty of Wayne State University
School of Medicine in Detroit.
Karmanos' Partners are hands-on
philanthropic volunteers, including
many young professionals, who share
their ideas and enhance resources to
help in the fight against cancer.

tion, call (313) 576-8111 or visit www.

JNF Honors 3 Couples
Jewish National Fund will honor three
couples that embody JNF's mission,
"As the caretaker of the land of Israel,
on behalf of its owners — Jewish
people everywhere."
Hannan and Lisa Lis, Bruce Israel
and Lisa Pernick and Col. (Res.) Kami
and Vardina Robinson will receive the
Tree of Life Award at JNF's Tribute and
Farewell Dinner Thursday, Sept. 6, at
6:30 p.m., at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek Southfield (black-tie optional).
Former Israel Ambassador to the
United Nations Dore Gold will speak.
An auction will feature art created

by Israeli artist Jacob Agam. Dinner
chairs are Jim and Marge Hiller.
Proceeds from the evening will
help rebuild northern Israel by con-
structing a visitor's center in the Hula
Valley. The Robinson-Hiller Visitor's
Center will provide economic develop-
ment opportunities for northern Israel
by increasing the number of visitors
and attracting international tourists to
the area; as the Hula Valley in Israel's
Galilee has become one of the main
migratory spots for birds enroute
between Europe and Africa.
Ticket cost is $250; $150 is tax-
deductible. Call (248) 324-3080 by
Aug. 24 to RSVP. Also inquire about
the benefits of sponsoring the dinner.
Hannan Lis is outgoing president of
JNF's Michigan Region. He serves on
JNF's national board and is chief oper-
ating officer of the Farmington Hills-
based Weight Watchers Group. Bruce
Israel is immediate past president of
JNF's Michigan Region. He is president
of ASI–Asphalt Specialists Inc.
For the last four years, Col. Robinson
has been JNF's Israel Emissary to the
Midwest. He returns to Israel in the fall.
Ambassador Gold is president of the
Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs. He
was the 11th permanent representative
of Israel to the U.N. (1997-1999) and
served as foreign policy adviser to
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Fond Farewell To Sharona
The American Jewish Committee
Metropolitan Detroit Chapter will
express its appreciation to outgo-
ing Michigan Area Director Sharona
Shapiro on Wednesday, Aug. 15,
at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield. The dessert reception and
short program hosted by the chapter's
board of directors and past presidents
will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Shapiro, her husband, attorney
David A. Lerner, and family moved
to Detroit in 1989 so she could take
on the leadership role at the AJC.
Previously, she worked for the AJC as
assistant director for northern Texas.
The chapter is thanking her for 20
years of service through her work with
the AJC. The program and reception is
open to the community but reserva-
tions are required. There is a charge of
$18 per guest.
David B. Jaffe and Erica Peresman
are serving as the evening's chairs and
Laura M. Gould is serving as a co-
chair. Reservations should be mailed
to the AJC at 6735 Telegraph Road,
Suite 320, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48301.
For information, call (248) 646-7686.
