Karmanos Honorees The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute's Dr. Jeffrey Forman and his wife, Miriam, will be honored for their philanthropy and commitment in the fight against cancer. They will be recognized at the Karmanos Cancer Institute's 14th annual Partners Events, which include the Partners Annual Golf Classic on Monday, Aug. 27, at Franklin Hills Country Club and the Partners Night on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. Dr. Forman received Karmanos' Partners honor in 1995, making him the first person ever to receive this rec- ognition twice. Dr. Forman is a recognized expert in prostate cancer. He has served as medical director for Karmanos Cancer Institute's Lawrence and Idell Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center in Farmington Hills since 2001 and con- tinues to serve patients at that loca- tion and at the Gershenson Radiation Oncology Center on Karmanos' main campus in Detroit. He is medical director for 21st Century Oncology at Karmanos' eight sites in southeast Michigan and is on the faculty of Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. JNF Honors 3 Couples Jewish National Fund will honor three couples that embody JNF's mission, "As the caretaker of the land of Israel, on behalf of its owners — Jewish people everywhere." Hannan and Lisa Lis, Bruce Israel and Lisa Pernick and Col. (Res.) Kami and Vardina Robinson will receive the Tree of Life Award at JNF's Tribute and Farewell Dinner Thursday, Sept. 6, at 6:30 p.m., at Congregation Shaarey Zedek Southfield (black-tie optional). Former Israel Ambassador to the United Nations Dore Gold will speak. An auction will feature art created by Israeli artist Jacob Agam. Dinner chairs are Jim and Marge Hiller. Proceeds from the evening will help rebuild northern Israel by con- structing a visitor's center in the Hula Valley. The Robinson-Hiller Visitor's Center will provide economic develop- ment opportunities for northern Israel by increasing the number of visitors and attracting international tourists to the area; as the Hula Valley in Israel's Galilee has become one of the main migratory spots for birds enroute between Europe and Africa. Fond Farewell To Sharona The American Jewish Committee Metropolitan Detroit Chapter will express its appreciation to outgo- ing Michigan Area Director Sharona Shapiro on Wednesday, Aug. 15, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield. The dessert reception and short program hosted by the chapter's board of directors and past presidents will begin at 7:30 p.m. Shapiro, her husband, attorney David A. Lerner, and family moved to Detroit in 1989 so she could take on the leadership role at the AJC. Previously, she worked for the AJC as assistant director for northern Texas. The chapter is thanking her for 20 years of service through her work with the AJC. The program and reception is open to the community but reserva- tions are required.
