KRYS TYNA 9
HANDY SHOW: Fierce acrobatics, extreme
sports, contemporary dance, hip-hop music, edgy
comedy and multimedia projection enter into the
act when the 7 Fingers Circus takes the stage.
The troupe (right), appearing at the Ann Arbor
Summer Festival, plans two distinct performanc-
es. The adult version begins at 8 p.m. Saturday,
June 16, at the Power Center, 121 Fletcher, where
a family-friendly version starts at 2 p.m. Sunday,
June 17. The Canadian-based entertainers, fea-
turing former Cirque du Soleil performers, dress
casually for their gimmick-loaded choreography
and prop-filled antics. The company claims to move to a post-modern beat and even
includes audience members for some interactive surprises. $28-$46. (734) 994-5999.
FIRST FEST: This year's waterfront fireworks (top), in celebration of Independence
Day, illuminate a new festival — Detroit International River Days. The event, run-
ning June 22-27 along Detroit's new RiverWalk, features family-friendly entertain-
ment 11 a.m.-midnight Friday-Saturday and 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday-Wednesday.
The fireworks display ends the festival, which includes food stations, music, car
celebrations and maritime activities. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra kicks off
the entertainment at 5 p.m. Friday, and bands will perform daily in front of the
Renaissance Center. The Chevy Racing Tour with NASCAR drivers Clint Bowyer
and J.J. Yeley can be seen on Tuesday. There also will be a parade of decorated boats,
dock jumping, a dog walk and a tugboat race. While most events are free, the VIP
Rooftop Party — 6-11 p.m. Wednesday, June 27 — benefits the Parade Company
as tickets go for $175. For a complete schedule, go to detroitriverdays.com .
NOTABLE PEER PRESSURE: A basketball captain and a super-smart student
find their ways into a talent extravaganza in the touring play High School Musical.
The show, being presented June 26-July 8 at Detroit's Fisher Theatre, gets vacation-
ing students off to a singing-dancing summer with the addition of two new songs
that were not in the film. The themes also can relate to parents and grandparents
as they think about trying new ventures. "It's a great message, and it's a clean mes-
sage," says composer David Lawrence. "It's a fun message, and it's laced with really
cool songs that kids, parents and grandparents can sing and dance to." The curtain
goes up at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturdays, 1 and 6:30 p.m.
Sundays and 1 p.m. July 3 and 5. $28-$68. (313) 872-1000.
