and recording artist LaShell Griffin (right) stars
at Dream Catchers, a dinner party and concert
benefiting Variety, The Children's Charity. The
event starts at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 16, at the
Townsend Hotel in Birmingham. In its second
year, Dream Catchers is named after a Native
American tradition, which has parents hanging a
small, circular weaving near sleeping children to
let good dreams through and block evil. Guests
will see enlarged and displayed photos taken by 15
local children whose images depict their dreams.
The youngsters represent organizations that
Variety serves. Shutterbug sessions were com-
pleted with the help and instruction of celebrity
photographer Linda Solomon. Event co-chairs
are Bruce Kridler and Richard Gershenson, both
of Bloomfield Hills. $250-$500. (248) 258-5511.

GANGSTER CHIC: The grandmother who lives in a remodeled home once used
by members of the Purple Gang opens her doors to the public as part of the fourth
annual Sylvan Lake Home and Garden Tour. Seven homes and gardens — plus
three additional gardens — can be toured 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 16. The
most illustrious home was used for bootlegging during Prohibition, and the cedar
exterior of this craftsman-style house was used to disguise the odors from the liquor.
The home's interior attractions come with the placement of antique furnishings.
An uncle's icebox in the dining room, for example, now serves as a storage bar. This
year's tour provides shuttle busses and musicians playing in Memorial Park as visitors
get to see rebuilt exteriors, modernized decors and lushly colorful plant life. $10-$15.

Gave My Sole to Parkinson's, also a 5K run, has its first day Saturday, June 9, and is
based at South Lake Schools, 23101 Stadium, Saint Clair Shores. The second event,
held Sunday, June 10, is based at Maybury State Park, Eight Mile, west of Beck, in
Northville. Both paths are stroller, wheelchair, child and dog friendly. Funds raised
by individuals and teams support the Michigan Parkinson Foundation. More than
35,000 people in the state suffer with the disease that progresses slowly, from symp-
toms such as tremors and slowness of movement to rigidity and loss of balance.
Both walks go forward rain or shine. (800) 852-9781; parkinsonmi.org .
