JAFI Unveils Memorial
Jerusalem/JTA — The Jewish Agency for
Israel unveiled a memorial to Jews mur-
dered in terrorist and anti-Semitic attacks
abroad.
The ceremony was held Monday, on Yom
HaZikaron, Israel's Memorial Day, outside
the JAFI building in Jerusalem, and was
attended by victims' family members liv-
ing in Israel.
"In this ceremony, the State of Israel
recognizes, for the first time, hundreds of
people who paid with their lives because

they were part of the Jewish people and
connected to the State of Israel," Jewish
Agency Chairman Zeev Bielski said at the
ceremony, which was held in conjunction
with the World Zionist Organization, the
Jewish National Fund, Keren Hayesod and
the United Jewish Communities of North
America.
Some 200 Jews have been killed in anti-
Semitic attacks abroad since 1948. Their
names are inscribed on the memorial.

Boris Yeltsin Dies
Moscow/JTA — Boris Yeltsin, the former
Russian president whose years in power
saw a mass emigration of Jews and the
renaissance of Jewish life in the former
Soviet Union, died at age 76.
While it was Yeltsin's predecessor,
Mikhail Gorbachev, who opened the gates
for Soviet Jews, Yeltsin played a key role
in the downfall of the Soviet regeime and
continued to open up the country. Yeltsin
spoke out against anti-Semitism and was
seen as friendly to the Jewish community.
Under Yeltsin, Russia's relations with
Israel improved and Russia became active
in the Middle East peace process.
