Teacher
And Volunteer

E

leanore Jane
(Kahn) Silk,
85, a long-
time resident of the
Detroit area died April
19, 2007, in her retire-
ment apartment in
Chicago surrounded by
her children, daugh-
ters Barbara and
Susan. She had been
in deteriorating health
Eleanore Silk
for several years and
relocated to Chicago
in 2003 to be closer to her children.
Born and raised in Salt Lake
City, Utah, Mrs. Silk attended the
University of Southern California,
Stephens College in Columbia, Mo.,
and graduated from the National
College of Education (now National-
Louis University) in Evanston, Ill., in
1943. She met her future husband,
Irving, while he was stationed at the
fort in Salt Lake City during World
War II.
Mrs. Silk came to Detroit in 1944
as a young bride, taught school in
Detroit for a year before the birth
of her first child, Susan, and then
became a full-time mom. Daughter
Barbara was born two years later.
When both children were in school,
Mrs. Silk returned to the classroom
and worked as a teacher in the
Detroit Public Schools for 30 years.
While a full-time teacher, mother
and wife, she was also a devoted
volunteer, serving in several lead-
ership roles with the Lt. Raymond

Zussman Auxiliary
of the Jewish War
Veterans of America
for more than 50
years. Perhaps
her proudest JWV
achievement was the
annual scholarship
program that awarded
needy high school
seniors funds for their
college studies.
After retiring from
teaching, Mrs. Silk
became a volunteer in support of
the Southfield Public Library serv-
ing on the Friends of the Library
and personally advocating for the
creation of what is now the new,
modern library.
A passionate traveler, she was
always heading off to see new
sights and learn new things with
her daughters and friends. Often,
she told her children, When it is
my time to go, don't cry for me ... I
have had a wonderful life." And so
she did.
Burial will be during a memo-
rial service on May 3 at Rosehill
Cemetery in Chicago.
In addition to her children,
Mrs. Silk is survived by her niece,
Francine Kahan of Commerce
Township.
