JAN FRIEDMAN WEIMER, former Detroiter of Los Angeles, died April 13, 2007. She was a member of the June 1961 class of Mumford High School. She was also a former Weimer food editor of Bon Appetite magazine and published numerous articles as a prominent food writer. She was a kitchen designer and a well-known consultant in the culinary business, as well as the author of three books. Mrs. Weimer is survived by her husband of 42 years, Dr. Sanford Weimer; mother, Cyrille Friedman of Laguna Woods, Calif.; brother Sam Friedman of Palo Alto, Calif.; 13 nieces and nephews. ROSALYN WITTCOFF, 82, of Southfield, died April 21, 2007. A professional singer in Windsor and Detroit, she was active with Recovery and ORT. Mrs. Wittcoff is survived by her hus- band, Irwin Wittcoff of Southfield; daugh- ter and partner, Susan Wittcoff and Aimee Waldman of Oakland, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law, Paul Witcoff and Arleen Temer-Wittcoff; grandchildren, Anna and Benjamin Wittcoff, Joshua Breitzer and his fiancee Donna Barekat. JAFI Unveils Memorial Jerusalem/JTA — The Jewish Agency for Israel unveiled a memorial to Jews mur- dered in terrorist and anti-Semitic attacks abroad. The ceremony was held Monday, on Yom HaZikaron, Israel's Memorial Day, outside the JAFI building in Jerusalem, and was attended by victims' family members liv- ing in Israel. "In this ceremony, the State of Israel recognizes, for the first time, hundreds of people who paid with their lives because they were part of the Jewish people and connected to the State of Israel," Jewish Agency Chairman Zeev Bielski said at the ceremony, which was held in conjunction with the World Zionist Organization, the Jewish National Fund, Keren Hayesod and the United Jewish Communities of North America. Some 200 Jews have been killed in anti- Semitic attacks abroad since 1948. Their names are inscribed on the memorial. Boris Yeltsin Dies Moscow/JTA — Boris Yeltsin, the former Russian president whose years in power saw a mass emigration of Jews and the renaissance of Jewish life in the former Soviet Union, died at age 76. While it was Yeltsin's predecessor, Mikhail Gorbachev, who opened the gates for Soviet Jews, Yeltsin played a key role in the downfall of the Soviet regeime and continued to open up the country. Yeltsin spoke out against anti-Semitism and was seen as friendly to the Jewish community. Under Yeltsin, Russia's relations with Israel improved and Russia became active in the Middle East peace process.
