JCC Plans Tribute
The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit will host its second
annual celebration dinner by honor-
ing William Clay Ford Jr., executive
chairman of Ford Motor Company, and
Florine Mark, president and CEO of
Weight Watchers, for their service to the
community.
The event, which includes a dinner,
auction and special tribute presentation,
will take place Tuesday, April 24, at the
Center's West Bloomfield facility.
Ford will receive the Center's first City
of Detroit "Boneh Kehillah" (builder
of the community) award. A lifelong
environmentalist, he is responsible for
the first Ford Motor Company wildlife
habitat, and as vice chairman of the
Detroit Lions, led efforts to build a new,
environmentally friendly stadium in the
city.
Mark will be presented with the
Center's "Boneh Kehillah" award for
her service to the Jewish community.
In addition to her continuing success
with Weight Watchers, Mark serves as
an adviser, advocate and board member
on 35 committees and civic organiza-
tions including the American Heart
Association, the Detroit Institute for
Children and Seeds of Peace.
Dinner and program are $180 per
person. Proceeds will benefit JCC youth
programs.

D.C. Mission Planned
Zionist Organization of America will
have its annual mission to Capitol Hill on
Tuesday and Wednesday, June 19-20.
Registration is $199 for adults ($170
by May 1) and $99 for college students.

Middle East Monitoring Research

Women Slate Conference
The annual conference for the Michigan
Region of Women's League for
Conservative Judaism will be Sunday,
April 29, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek
West Bloomfield B'nai Israel Center.
Joyce Weingarten, Michigan Region
is president. Conference chairs are
Shannon Dickstein, Sherri Morof
and Joanne Robinson. The theme is
"Wholeness and Holiness: A Jewish
Exploration of Body and Sour
Addressing this issue will be Rabbi
Rachel Shere of Adat Shalom Synagogue.
The keynote talk will be by Women's
League Consultant and International Vice
President Rita Wertlieb.
In addition, the following Eishet
Hayil Honorees, who were recognized at
Women's League Convention 2006, will
again be honored as Valued Volunteers:

Brotherhood Hosts Doctors
Drs. Brian Guz, Ed Schervish and Ken
Kernen of the Michigan Institute of
Urology will be guest speakers at 9:30
a.m. Sunday, April 29, at the Temple
Beth El Brotherhood's Sunday Morning
Speakers Series in Bloomfield Township.
The subject will be prostate cancer,
the most common cancer affecting men.
Topics to be covered include prostate
cancer screening, the role of PSA, and
treatments of prostate cancer includ-
ing external beam radiation therapy,
brachytherapy, cryotherapy and robotic
prostatectomy. A question and answer
period will follow.
Guests are welcome for breakfast at
8:45 a.m. There is a $2 charge for break-
fast; there is no charge for the program.

Season Starts
Adat Shalom
Synagogue will con-
tinue its second season
of SYNergy Shabbat
programming on April
27 and 28 featuring-
Arnold Eisen
Professor Arnold Eisen,
chancellor-elect of the
Jewish Theological Seminary.
Rabbi Daniel Nevins, future dean of the
JTS Rabbinical School, will introduce Eisen
at an 8 p.m. dinner Friday. Eisen will dis-

cuss "The Meaning of Mitzvah: Reclaiming
the Core Commitment of Judaism:'
Eisen will give the Shabbat morn-
ing sermon. Following Kiddush, he
will offer an interactive discussion on
"New Directions for the Conservative
Movement and American Jewry."
Activities will begin at 5:45 p.m. on
Friday evening with Shabbat Shaboom, a
musical service for families with children
through second grade. A Shabbat Rocks
Kabbalat Shabbat service will begin at 6
p.m., followed by a buffet. Dinner reser-
vations are required.
Shabbat morning begins with Talmud
study at 8:30. Services begin at 9, and a
shtiebl minyan service starts at 9:30.
There will be a 10:30 a.m. Yoga &
Yiddishkeit Jr. program, for children
through fourth grade and their parents.
Drop-off youth services begin at 10:15.
Co-chairs are Carol Weintraub Fogel of
West Bloomfield and Phyllis Pilcowitz of
Bloomfield Hills.
The community is welcome at no
charge, with the exception of the Shabbat
dinner for which there is a charge.

Auction At Gala

As part of its 2007 gala honoring

William Clay Ford Jr. and Weight
Watchers CEO Florine Mark, the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit will hold a live and a silent auc-
tion with a collection of items, including
a Ford Mustang convertible.
The gala will be Tuesday, April 24, at
the Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield. Hors d'oeuvres will be at 6
p.m., followed by the 7 p.m. auction and
dinner at 8 p.m. All proceeds from the
event will benefit children's program-
ming at the JCC.
Auction items range from a golf
game with Barry Sanders to lunch with
Broadway composer Charles Strouse.
