highlighted the second
melavah malkah (post-
Shabbat celebration) held under the
auspices of the local Conservative
movement's Shir Hadash program at
Congregation B'nai Moshe in West
Bloomfield on Feb. 11.
"We had people of all ages dancing
and singing and listening to Jewish
music to celebrate the conclusion of
Shabbat," said Cantor Earl Berris of
B'nai Moshe.
Chevra West region sponsored the
event.
Anyone interested in new Jewish
music, a Shir Hadash listserve with
resources, or a melavah malka kit can
e-mail Nancy Kaplan at
nkaplan@uscy.org.
With Shabbat starting earlier,
Kaplan says Shir Hadash will shift its
focus from melavah malkah programs
to promoting Friday evening Kabbalat
Shabbat programs — with instru-
ments and song — at Conservative
synagogues this summer. ❑

Shir Hadash (A New Song) was
born last year after a Cantor's
Assembly program introducing new
music for the Conservative movement.
"Lay people took it and adapted the
logo and concept of giving music a
higher priority in synagogue thought,"
Cantor Berris said. "As with the
Chasidim, music allows those not as
knowledgeable in the more academic
areas to be more spiritual and active
in Jewish life."
Following Havdalah, B'nai Moshe's
new family band, made up of parents
and children, gave its inaugural per-
formance at the event. The
Klezmaniacs, a local Klezmer band,
also performed. Uri Segal led spirited
Israeli dancing.
The majority of the 100 or so par-
ticipants came from B'nai Moshe and
Congregation Beth Ahm. Members
from both synagogues have been
spearheading the program. United
Synagogue of Conservative Judaism's
Members of the B'nai Moshe family
band include Doron Berris of
Farmington Hills, Penina Rubin and
Laura Katsnelson, both of West
Bloomfield.
