L

eora Ben-Ze'ev found a
perfect fit for her bat
mitzvah project. With
help from family, friends and a
business owner who is a mem-
ber of her synagogue, she col-
lected 280 pairs of gloves.
They were donated two weeks
ago to the Capuchin Service
Center in Detroit, which oper-
ates a homeless shelter and
other social service programs.
At the shelter, new arrivals get a
shower, new clothes and gloves.
The 12-year-old, whose bat
mitzvah will be at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek Southfield on Aug.
19, knew that gloves are easier to

solicit in the winter than in the
warmer months. Her brother,
. Jon, 16, collected socks for the
Capuchin center three years ago
for his bar mitzvah project.
Leora selected gloves because
"I wanted to do something small
so people would hopefully donate
more than one pair, compared to
asking for coats." She also learned
from her brother's socks cam-
paign that "little things can make
a big difference."
A big boost for Leora's cam-
paign came from David Broner,
owner of Broner Glove Co. in
Auburn Hills, whom the Ben-
Ze'evs know from Shaarey
Zedek.
Leora's mother, Ilana, was at a

Bloomfield midway through the
glove campaign when she
noticed a box with Broner's
name.
At the time, the goal for the
campaign was 165 pairs. Broner
gave the family 100 pairs,
boosting Leora to 280 pairs.
As part of the campaign,
which began in November,
Leora solicited students at her
Roeper School, family members
and friends. She urged potential
donors to "have warm hearts for
cold hands and that the little
things can make a difference,"
her mother said. The Ben-Ze-

evs invited friends and family to
a Jan. 8 brunch at their
Huntington Woods home.
Admission was a donation of
gloves. About 60 persons attend-
ed, and Roeper School students
baked large cookies decorated
with the shape of a glove.
After delivering the gloves to
the Capuchin center, Mrs. Ben-
Ze'ev compared the size of the
donation to the size of Leora's
school, which has 300 students.
George Gaerig, Capuchin's
operations director, wrote the
family to say the adult gloves
will used for homeless persons
while the children's gloves and
mittens will be used in the chil-
