Beth El Glazer Scholar

On Friday, Feb. 10, Dr. David
Ruderman will be the scholar in res-
idence for Temple Beth El's 64th
annual Rabbi B. Benedict and Ada S.
Glazer Institute on Judaism for
Christian, Eastern Orthodox, Muslim
and Protestant clergy.
Dr. Ruderman is the Joseph
Meyerhoff Professor of Modern
Jewish History and director of the
Center for Advanced Judaic Studies
at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Ruderman
will address the
institute partici-
pants in two lec-
tures Friday
morning, Feb. 10,
on "Two Special
Moments in the
History of
Jewish-Christian
Dr. Ruderman
Relations and
Their Meaning
for Both Faith Communities Today."
His 9:30 a.m. address, "Jews,
Christians and the Study of
Kabbalah in Renaissance Italy" will
be followed by a 10:45 a.m. presenta-
tion on "Connecting the Covenants:
Judaism and the Search for Christian
Identity in 18th Century England."
Both sessions are open to the com-
munity without charge. No reserva-
tions are necessary.
Dr. Ruderman will also speak at
Beth El's Friday evening and
Saturday morning Shabbat services
on 'A Tale of Two Jewish Cities: Two
Communities and Their Legacies for
Contemporary Jews." He will focus
on "Venice: Are Ghettos Good or Bad
for Jews?" at 7:30 p.m. Friday. At
10:30 a.m., Saturday, he will discuss
"Amsterdam: The Challenge of
Living in Two Worlds".
Chair of this year's institute is
Marjie Federman. The institute is
made possible through a Heritage
Endowment Gift from Merton and
Beverly Segal and Marvin and Peggy
Novick and donations from Glazer
patrons.

Words Of Deep Prayer

Dr. Richard Lederman, executive
director of United Synagogue of
Conservative Judaism's Great Lakes
& Rivers Region, will lead a study
session titled "Deep Davenen,"
exploring ways to use davening to
better hear the words of prayers and
God's response.
The session will be offered twice.
There is no charge.
Dr. Lederman will offer the shiur
(discourse) first 7:30-9 p.m.
