over 1,200 things, and I'm on the
second journal now. They're the lit-
tle things in my life that I love, that
I wasn't always conscious of —
things like watching my son run-
ning up and down the basketball
court, watching the Pistons play, the
first snow, seeing my parents hold
hands after 50 years of marriage,
sharing a Shabbat dinner with my
friends, the summers I worked on
kibbutz in Israel, critiquing a
movie, playing Scrabble with my
girlfriend every week."

What are you most grate-
ful for?

"I am mostly grateful for the
people who held my hand through
this difficult journey. I have a lot of
friends, really special, wonderful
friends and family."

Is the journal therapeu-
tic?

"It helps when I'm feeling sorry
for myself — I take it out and start
writing in it. It just helps me get
through a bad time by focusing on
the positive. I look at them; and my
friends take a look at them, and it
helps them take a look at their
lives.
"I have given journals to some of
my friends — it really helps when
you're feeling anxious and sad. I
just think we don't spend enough
time saying the things to people
that we love. It's a good way to
express your feelings. It's been a
healthy way to get through a diffi-
cult time."

You were so active. What
do you do now?

"I do yoga about three times a
week at the Yoga Shelter in West
Bloomfield. I started going there
when I heard they have a gratitude
circle. I felt very welcome there. I
started doing yoga and found it
made me feel very peaceful. I've
also started running a little -now!"

Are you involved in any
local volunteer efforts?

Yes, I have volunteered at
Friendship Circle's Lifetown and
have raised money and helped with
projects for the David Hermelin
Brain Tumor Research Center at
Henry Ford Hospital."
