The Jewish Fund of Metro Detroit has awarded City Year Detroit the 2005
Robert Sosnick Award of Excellence, honoring efforts to improve the quality
of life of vulnerable populations. City Year is a national service program that
calls on young people ages 17-24 to give a year to community service, lead-
ership development and civic engagement. The Jewish Fund, Jewish
Federation and United Jewish Foundation helped bring this program to
Metro Detroit in 1999. Each year, the Jewish community sponsors six to
eight young people to provide in-school tutoring, mentoring and other pro-
grams for low-income children in Detroit. Above are the City Year Heroes'
Team and Detroit Jewish community representatives Rena Friedberg, second
from right, and Joyce Keller, right, both of Farmington Hills-based JARC.

Rabbi SchneOr Greenberg of the Chabad Jewish Center of Commerce takes
the first cut of his 3-year-old son Levi's hair at a hair-cutting celebration
and menorah lighting on Dec. 25 (above). "We begin educating a Jewish
child from the moment they are born:' Rabbi Greenberg said. "But now
. begins the more formal education. Now is also when we he starts to wear a
yarmulke, tzitzit (four-cornered prayer garment) and peyot (side curls)."
Levi, born on the first day of Chanukah, takes a break during his haircut to
light his own chanukiyah (at top) with the help of his father. Guests at the
party watched a slide show of Levi doing mitzvot, and asking them to do a
mitzvah in his honor "to make the world a brighter place."
