Kudos: Being Grateful
ulie Levin, 46, grew up in
Southfield, attended
Southfield High School and
earned two masters degrees — in
urban planning and library science.
For 12 years, she was a children's
librarian at the Bloomfield Township
Library.
She has always been an athletic per-
son, swimming and running often.
One day last March, while she was
walking her dog, she experienced
vision problems. Tests revealed she
had a malignant brain tumor. Two
surgeries followed, and she currently
is undergoing chemotherapy and radi-
ation. treatment.
To help herself maintain a positive
attitude, she started a journal to
express her gratitude for her family
and friends and for the little things in
life often taken for granted. She now
has more than 1,200 entries.

Why did you start a grati-
tude journal?
"After the first surgery, I woke up
and I could talk, walk, see and hear. I
was so elated that I decided to start
this gratitude journal and write down
all the precious things in life you don't
always look at."
How did the journal grow to
include others?
"I started giving it to all my guests
and friends and people who came to
see me, then they filled out a page.
Sometimes they had to think a little
about it. I have a lot of friends from
out of town, and they e-mailed theirs.
My two sons have written in it."
What kinds of things are in
the journal?
"It's just a list really. Every couple of
days, I jot something down. I have
