Ask The Orthodontist
I frequently get asked the questions about "Over bites."
-
Over-bite is the amount of vertical overlap of the front
teeth. Too much, or insufficient over-bite can cause
problems.

Excessive over-bite, known as a deep over-bite, is too
much overlap of the front teeth. A parent noticing that
the lower front teeth are not visualized very much when
the teeth are closed together can detect this. This
situation causes excessive force from biting which is

back teeth and not designed to take that force). This
can lead to excessive wear, fracturing and chipping of the teeth and may even
predispose the individual to future TMD, which are jaw joint difficulties.
Sometimes the over-bite may be so deep that the lower front teeth actually reach
the palate and lead toward other problems. This is referred to as a deep impinging
over-bite. •
Insufficient over-bite is referred to as an anterior (or front) open-bite. This not
only creates a cosmetic issue, but also without the front teeth able to bite together
properly, may lead to excessive force on the posterior or back, teeth. This can lead
to excessive wear and future restorative dental needs such as crowns, etc.
The malocclusion known as over-bite deserves attention because it can potentially
interfere with speaking, swallowing, chewing foods and is considered a cosmetic
concern. Parents with any orthodontic concerns for their child should consult an
orthodontist concerning their need for orthodontic treatment. As a dental
specialist, an,orthodontist has elected to limit his practice to this specific area or
expertise and has received additional training by an accredited dental school for
advanced education.
