Bernie Beigel finds his mate
on their first date.

It didn't take long for Bernie
Beigel to know that the young
woman he took on a blind date
60 years ago would be his wife.
After he and Charlotte Schiff
went to a movie and dinner in
New York City, where they lived,
he went home to tell his father,
"I'm going to marry that girl:'
That was in March 1945. Three
weeks later, they were engaged
and on Aug. 28, 1945, they mar-
ried in a double ceremony with
Charlotte's sister, Eva, and broth-
er-in-law, Geri Wertheimer.
The West Bloomfield couple,
members of Temple Israel for
15 years, marked their 60th

before they retired in 1990.

York City shortly after
Kristallnacht in early November
1938, when the Nazis incited a
nationwide attack on Jewish
businesses, homes and syna-
gogues. At the time, Bernie's
family lived in Berlin;
Charlotte's was in Frankfort.

Charlotte's family emigrated
to the U.S. one week after
Kristallnacht, on Nov. 17, her
14th birthday. "It was the best
birthday gift I could have," she
said.
Their first date was
arranged through an associate
of Bernie, who owned an acces-
sory retail business.
"Bernie was a sharp charac-
ter, a good looking guy and we
came from the same back-
grounds," Charlotte recalled.
Bernie said Charlotte was a
"good looking lady — and still
is."
He would know. He had some
pretty girlfriends and even
