works, at 5 p.m. Thursday, March
17, as part of the Penny W. Stamps
Distinguished Visitors Lecture Series
presented by U-M School of Art &
Design.
Silver is glad to see the festival's
inclusion of video and its equal
standing with film. She hopes this
will encourage even more would-be
artists to pick up a camera and take
advantage of what modern technolo-
gy has made much easier than when
she began.
"I started as an editor to get access
to equipment," says Silver of her 15
years as a film and video editor that
included work on feature films and
music videos. "In 1980, a camera
cost $80,000."
She is encouraging but realistic in
her advice to those who want to
make films.

"Do it. Decide on what you like to
do and pursue it," she says. "But
don't do it with the expectation of
fame and fortune or focus on market
success. It's really a crapshoot."
Unlike most festivals that have the
jury sit together to screen films, the
Ann Arbor festival puts jury mem-
bers in with general audiences. Silver
finds it a better way to experience
the work.
"I look for something that cap-
tures my imagination, that is some-
thing to really look at," she says of
her judging preferences. "I look for
something that surprises me and has
artistry. I want something that wants.
to enter a dialogue." ❑

The 43rd annual Ann Arbor Film Festival takes place March 15-20 at the
Michigan Theater, 603 E. Liberty, in Ann Arbor. Individual tickets are $8;
a series pass is $80.
Details will be screened 9:30 p.m. Thursday, March 17; The Future of
Food will be screened 1 p.m. Sunday, March 20; Shelly Silver screens her
works as part of the jurors' presentation 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 16; she
includes portions of her installation Rooster and, through video, film and
photography, explores the connections that tie us to a place, an identity or
a gender, 5 p.m. Thursday, March 17 (free).
