said. "This should put the
Arab countries and leaders on
notice that they need to
democratize. {The current
situation] is not acceptable to
the people and world opin-
ion."
The breakfast discussion
ranged from the similarities
between the Jewish and
Chaldean communities,
including language and sto-
ries of persecution, to differ-
ent understandings of the
events that compelled more
than 120,000 Iraqi Jews to
flee to Israel in 1951-52.
Today, about 800,000
Chaldeans live in Iraq
among the 1 million
Christians there, while,
according to Black, less than
a dozen Jews remain.
Local American Jewish
Committee Director Sharona
Shapiro also shared her expe-

"It was a pretty momen-
tous point in my own per-
sonal life," she said. "I was
able to observe history in the
making. It was moving to
watch our fellow Americans
vote for their homeland's
future government. It was
exciting and emotional for
everyone.
While there were differ-
ences among the participants
about the prospects of suc-
cess in Iraq, there was agree-
ment to work together to
meet the challenges ahead.
As Black told the group,
"Will Iraq's newly elected
majority use this as an
opportunity to install a
theocracy with a lack of plu-
ralism, or will it really be an
opportunity to embark on
the road to democracy?"

JVS recently began operating the MS
Achievement Center in partnership
with the Michigan Chapter of the
National Multiple Sclerosis Society
(NMSS) to provide enrichment activi-
ties specific to the needs of people
with MS. The program helps people
with special needs remain independ-
ent and connected to the community.
According to JVS Activities Program
Supervisor LuAnn Elwell, who over-
sees the MS Achievement Center, the
activities offered help people with MS
maintain their abilities, regain skills

they have lost or learn new ones.
Activities include computer use and
training, exercise, guest speakers,
games and crafts.
The MS Achievement Center is
open 1-4 p.m. Thursdays to individu-
als who are ambulatory, can attend to
their own personal needs or who have
a personal attendant to provide assis-
tance. Classes are $20 to drop-in or
$15 each with a 12-week enrollment.
For information, call the NMSS,
