Empire Chicken
Is Recalled

Empire Kosher Poultry is recalling
5,700 pounds of chicken products
because of possible listeria contami-
nation.
The products include Empire buffa-
lo-style wings and chicken wings with
the date code "1414" and Empire
breaded fried chicken with the date
code "0274."
The chicken was processed by the
Schreiber company in Maspeth, N.Y.,
and distributed in 13 states across the
United States, including Michigan.
Last spring, Trader Joe's markets on
the West Coast stopped carrying
Empire products because the "Empire
chicken people can no longer supply
our needs." According to the Jewish
Journal of Greater Los Angeles, two
Trader Joe's managers said individual
packages of chicken were short-
weighted by as much as a half pound.
The Journal also reported that
Whole Foods Markets stopped selling
Empire products in September
because Empire used antibiotics and
animal byproducts in the chicken
feed. Empire says its chickens are
grown "naturally, without any growth
promotants, such as steroids, hor-
mones or artificial ingredients."

'THE ISSUE

May

Iraq's first free elections in some 50
years may have an impact on Israeli
security and on Arab-Jewish rela-
tions in general, depending on who
comes to power and what freedoms
are realized in that country.

Critical thinkers. Confident leaders. Committed Jews.

BEE:IND THE ISSUE

If the Iraqi government follows in the
pro-Western footsteps of its neighbor
Turkey and allies itself with the
United States, then Israel will be posi-
tively affected. But if the government
aligns with. Iran, a hostile "eastern
front" toward Israel will be created.
Internally, if religious freedom is
granted, both Jews and Christians
may some day make peaceful pil-
grimages to the revered tomb of the
biblical prophet Nachum, near
Mosul, Iraq.
