Allan and Harriet Gelfond

Harriet and Allan "Geli" Gelfond of
Farmington Hills will donate $10,000
over five years to fund a scholarship for
Wayne State University social work
majors who plan to work with those
with developmental disabilities.
The Gelfonds have three adult chil-
dren, including a daughter with develop-
mental disabilities and a closed-head
injury. The couple have been married 50
years, and Geli says they remember the
difficult financial strux e they had when
he was working towards his master's in
social work at Detroit-based WSU.
"Our preference with the scholarship
is for it to go to those addressing devel-
opmental disabilities, not only because

but because we have had a lot to do with
JARC over the years," Geli said.
Geli is senior financial resource devel-
opment officer for the Jewish
Community Endowment Fund for the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit. He also serves on the WSU
board of visitors and has lent his expert-
ise in fund-raising to the board. Harriet,
who attended WSU, is a longtime

February 1995

There are an estimated 25,000 Palestinians in
Metro Detroit, as opposed to about 100,000 Jews.
Elsewhere in the Western Hemisphere, there is a
country where 400,000 Palestinians dwarf the
Jewish population of 15,000. Where?

There was something new at the latest Super
Bowl: Kosher snacks were sold to fans.
Chabad Lubavitch of Southwest Broward
County in Florida offered blintzes, knishes and
falafel at two stands it operates at Joe Robbie
Stadium in Miami. Chabad agreed not to sell hot
dogs, pizza or hamburgers so as not to be in com-
petition with other vendors.
