Glazer Institute On Tap
Advice For Parents
On Friday, Feb. 11, Rabbi Marc
Saperstein will be the scholar in resi-
dence for Temple Beth El's annual
Rabbi B. Benedict and Ada S. Glazer
Institute on Judaism for the Christian,
Eastern Orthodox, Muslim and
Protestant Clergy. The institute, attend-
ed annually by 300 area clergy, originat-
ed in 1942.
This year's speaker, Rabbi Saperstein,
is the Charles E. Smith Professor of
Jewish History and direc-
tor of the program in
Judaic studies at George
Washington University.
He is the author of sever-
al books and 30 articles
and reviews on Jewish
history, literature and
Saperstein
thought.
The rabbi will address participants in
.rwo lectures on Feb. 11 on "Jews Under
Christianity and Islam: What Does the
Historical Record Show?" A 9:30 a.m.
address is titled 'Abraham as Common
Ancestor: Does Sharing Unite or
Divide?" The 10:45 presentation will be
on "Christian Doctrine and the Nazi
Death Camps: The Ambiguities of
Influence." Both sessions are open to the
community at no charge.
Rabbi Saperstein will speak at
Shabbat services 7:30 p.m. Friday,
Feb. 11, on "Jews and Muslims:
Contacts Through the Centuries." His
topic at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12,
will be "How Golden Was the Golden
Age in Spain?"
Chairs of this year's institute are Dr.
Robert and Fayclare Blau. The Institute
is made possible through a heritage
endowment gift from Merton and
Beverly Segal and Marvin and Peggy
Novick and Glazer patron donations.
The Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit's Shalom Baby
program presents a parents' night out
7-9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, at the
Max M. Fisher Federation Building in
Bloomfield Township.
Speakers Janet Snider and Ellen
Yashinsky-Chute will address parents'
concerns about the growth, develop-
ment and medical issues of infants
and toddlers. There is no charge.
Coffee and dessert will be served.

Hebrew Classes Start
The Lifelong Learning program of
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit's Alliance for Jewish
Education will offer a new beginner's-
plus conversational Hebrew class for
students interested in studying
Hebrew and who have minimal prior
knowledge of the Hebrew language.
The class will be taught by Yishai
Castro. It will meet at 7:30-9:30 p.m.
Thursdays, at the Max M. Fisher
Federation Building, 6735 Telegraph
Road, Bloomfield Township, begin-
ning Feb. 3. Students interested in
other levels of conversational Hebrew
can still join one of many Hebrew
classes in progress.

JHAS Hosts 'Casino' Party
Jewish Home & Aging Services will
count on "millionaires" in the Jewish
community to be big spenders at its
annual fund-raiser to help improve
the quality of life for Jewish older
adults.
JHAS Auxiliary and its benefactors
will sponsor the Marvelous Motown
Magic Millionaires Party Saturday,
Feb. 5, at Knollwood Country Club
in West Bloomfield. A $125 ticket
will give the "millionaires" chips to
play the blackjack, roulette and craps
tables or just play bingo.
With a Motown music theme, the
party will feature valet parking, a
reception at 7:30 p.m., a dinner buf-
fet and gaming starting at 8:15 p.m.,
a dessert buffet at 10:30 p.m. and
prize distribution and a grand prize
drawing at 11 p.m. Therewill be one
complimentary drink and a cash bar,
plus a silent auction.
Proceeds from the party will be used
to improve Fleischman Residence-
Blumberg Plaza in West Bloomfield.
JHAS provides services for 10 pro-
grams in the Jewish community.
