"Yes, we sell trees to connect people
to the land of Israel. And today, we're
connecting people to Israel for the
future."
And the future is in the Negev
Desert, which represents 60 percent
of the land of Israel, but less than 8
percent of the population.

inches of rain a year, most of it within
a 24-hour period, said Russell
Robinson, Jewish National Fund exec-
utive vice president. "Yet, you see fish
farms everywhere, and you see olive
groves and tomatoes everywhere.
You've got to ask yourself, how does
two inches of rain a year produce this?
"That's the story of JNF," he said.
"We grow freshwater fish in brackish
water -- salt water from underground
together with the catchment for the
rain water. We use that water to grow
tomatoes that are exported to Spain in
the off season. Then we use that water
again to grow olives — that two years
ago exported olive oil to Italy."
He said that 157 reservoirs have
been created in Israel, one with
money raised locally, and the plan
is to build 50 more in the next
five years.
He also spoke of the JNF's histori-
cal ties to trees.
"Yes, with 250 million trees, Israel
is the only country in the world with
According to JNF calculations,
the Bedouin Arab population of
190,000 will double in the next
seven years.
"Outside of Beersheva, there are
110,000 Jews. If we don't move
250,000 people to the Negev in the
next five years, 500,000 in the next
10 years, we will lose the Negev," he
said. "We'll be a country of Tel Aviv,
Haifa and Jerusalem."
He briefly spoke of a $30 million
JNF project to develop 25 new com-
munities in the Negev.
JNF Israel emissary to the Midwest,
Ret. IDF Col. Kami Robinson, said
that after one year of starting a local
organization, the JNF Detroit Region
has raised more than $500,000 for the
HaSolelim water reservoir in the
Central Galilee region and elected a
30-member board.
"We are doing parlor meetings,
breakfast meetings and dinner
events," he said. "JNF, locally, is now
really on the map."
