JN: After this
experience, what
do you think
about the old
adage "forgive
and forget"?
SF: I've forgiv-
en Burton, and,
just as impor-
tantly, I've forgiv-
en myself for the
part I played.
Forget? Never.
BF: I won't
forget what hap-
pened either, but
I've forgiven
myself

JN: What about trust?
-SF: I trust Burton for the most part
now, but, as I say in the book, trust
takes years to build and only seconds to
destroy. It can take years to weave it
again.
BF: I trust myself now, and that's just
as important as whether Suzy trusts me.

JN: What effect has the book and the
publicity had on the rest of the family?
SR We've always been very private
people, but this has helped the whole
family bring our feelings into the open,
which has been very healing.
David Farbman (son): I'm incredibly
proud of my parents and the couple
they've become. Its been truly unbeliev-
able to watch my father transform from
a tough, no-nonsense businessman into
the most loving, compassionate man I
know.

JN: What are your future plans?
SF: I'm gathering stories from other
women for a sequel. I will keep their
identities anonymous if they prefer.

Burton and Suzy Farbman and Oprah Winfrey on the
"Oprah" set: A first hour of their interview aired May 14;
a second hour is scheduled to air in June.

JN: What things do you regret the
_most?
BF: As a businessman, the first thing I
learned was that you never cheat a part-
ner. Yet Suzy was my life partner, and I
did something I'd never do in business: I
cheated on her.
SF: I realized that many times during
the marriage, I had been critical and
manipulative instead of loving and
accepting.
BF: I thought that what I was doing
was my business; I didn't realize the
effect it had on the whole family, how
harmful it was for our children.
Hopefully, we've broken that cycle. I
didn't understand Suzy's need for her
own career. I thought that my career was
our career.

BF: We want to dedicate time to lec-
ture or host workshops for couples who
need help making their marriages work.

JN: What are some of the most impor-
tant ways your relationship has
changed?
SF: I can communicate things to
Burton that I was always afraid to share,
and he listens to me in a way he never
did before.
BF: We truly are best friends. We've
learned to share each other's passions.
Would I rather be out riding horses or
attending a book signing? Sure, I'd like
to be riding, but if Suzy is doing a book
signing, then that's where I want to be,
by her side, supporting her 100 percent.
SF: You don't always get what you
want, but you get what you need, and I
believe that we needed this in order to
be where we are today. ❑
