his very best friend," said
Rabbi Paul Yedwab, himself
a personal friend.
Mr. Lipson, 48, was with friends and
the family he was devoted to when he
died of a heart attack, vacationing at his
summer home in Bellaire, Mich., Aug.
8, 2003.
Intensely committed to his wife,
Debra, sons, Mark, 18, Kevin, 14, and
Brian, 9, his mother and other family
members, Mr. Lipson, a lawyer, was
never too busy to take time out from his
hurried professional life to be there for
them.
"The most important thing to him
was making us happy," said his son
Mark. "He was more than my father.
He taught me so much about life and

Detroiter of Sunrise Lakes, Fla., died
Aug. 10, 2003.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61
years, Beatrice "Bebe" Mandell; sons and
daughters-in-law, Melvyn and Beth
Mandell, Leslie and Helaine Mandell;
daughter and son-in-law, Ronna and
Larry Schultz; grandchildren, David
Mandell, Rebecca and Mike McMillan,

who I want to be. If I grow up to be
half the guy he was, I'll be happy.
When his son Brian was born with a
rare, life-threatening condition that
allowed fluids from feeding to enter his
lungs, Mr. Lipson and his family ago-
nized during the defect-correcting sur-
gery of their child at
Children's Hospital of
Michigan in Detroit.
He and his wife later
created the nonprofit
charity, ENSURE
(Endowment for
Surgical Research), rais-
ing $750,000 to bene-
