here once was a couple
who had two little chil-
dren who were excessively
mischievous. They were
always getting into trouble; their
parents could be assured that if any
mischief occurred in their town,
their youngsters were in some way
involved.
The parents sent their boys to see
the rabbi.
The younger boy went to meet
with him first. The rabbi sat the boy
down and asked him sternly,
"Where is God?"
The boy made no response, so the
rabbi repeated the question in an
even sterner tone, "Where is God?"
Again, the boy made no attempt

Hashanah and Yom Kippur is that
each year, these days of intense holi-
ness provide us with another chance
to find ways in which God and
Jewish observance can enhance each
and-every moment that we are alive.
Sitting in synagogue, davening
from a prayer book that is used only
three times a year, can often be over
whelming and discouraging. But this
time, let us commit ourselves to
selecting just one prayer, one song
or one message to meditate on in a
way that can speak to us in a spiri-
tually profound way.
And then, perhaps we will be
inspired to take a class, study a Torah
portion or take a trip to
Israel that can help keep
our newfound connection
solid throughout the corn-
ing New Year 5763.

voice even more and shook his fin-
ger at the boy's face, "WHERE IS
GOD?"
At that point, the boy bolted
from the office and ran
home, crying to his broth-
er: "We are in BIG trouble
this time. God is missing
and they think we did it!"
For many of us, these

reminder of how God is

Ten years later, I reflect on this

might all behave more like this sky-

of increased kindness?

will never forget it. In 1992, I
flew home from Israel during
the Gulf War.
I was 21 and a student at
Hebrew University in Jerusalem. I
arrived in New York City in the
middle of the night and was quickly
whisked out of the airport terminal.
Someone had called in a bomb
threat.
A skycap saw me struggling with
my duffel bag, tearful, panicked and
exhausted. He came over to me, gen-
tly took my bag and said to me,
"There is fear in your eyes. But you
don't need to be afraid. You are
going to be just fine." He pointed
the way to my Detroit flight home
