The firs: thing to consider when
planning your outdoor fete is loca-
tion. This will determine how and
what you can serve and how you will
serve it. A picnic doesn't need to be
transported in a vehicle to be a pic-
nic.
A tablecloth spread near the
rhododendrons in your back yard pre-
sents different possibilities than when
you travel several miles to a park. In
your back yard you can serve on your
best china without fear of breakage
and still use your dishwasher in the
end.
Take your show on the road, and
the universe of possibilities changes.
A public venue may not permit, say,
glass containers. Or the absence of
cleaning facilities can limit your uten-
sil choices. The distance from car to
eating spot may make carrying heavy
items a real chore.
Once you know where you're
going, you'll know what to take.

and fine art. - It will take your breath away.

Getting the picnic from trunk to
turf may be easier said than done.
Few folks have the perfect basket to
carry everything in one neat package.
That's where a little ingenuity comes
in. The modern version of the two
handled basket is the cooler. Great.
Use the cooler just for food — it's
safer. But bring everything else in a
basket. It doesn't have to be the quin-
tessential type that you carry over
your arm. A laundry basket lined
with a pretty tablecloth can be just
the ticket. After you remove the cloth
(which, incidentally, you can use to
sit on or display your food), line the
basket with a colorful garbage bag
and use it for refuse. You can remove
the bag from the basket before (Yoinc ,
home and toss it, or keep it in the
basket to take home dirty dishes and
such. Just tie it up and there's no
mess in your car.
Other ways to pack a picnic are
limited only to your imagination. If
you have an SUV, take along a new,
inexpensive plastic wheelbarrow or
children's wagon. Or you can even
use a wire cart (the ones people use at
farmers' markers). Even a baby stroller
can make transporting gear easier.
Backpacks are great for drinks and
