This will determine how and what you can serve and how you will serve it. A picnic doesn't need to be transported in a vehicle to be a pic- nic. A tablecloth spread near the rhododendrons in your back yard pre- sents different possibilities than when you travel several miles to a park. In your back yard you can serve on your best china without fear of breakage and still use your dishwasher in the end. Take your show on the road, and the universe of possibilities changes. A public venue may not permit, say, glass containers. Or the absence of cleaning facilities can limit your uten- sil choices. The distance from car to eating spot may make carrying heavy items a real chore. Getting the picnic from trunk to turf may be easier said than done. Few folks have the perfect basket to carry everything in one neat package. That's where a little ingenuity comes in. The modern version of the two handled basket is the cooler. Great. Use the cooler just for food — it's safer. But bring everything else in a basket. It doesn't have to be the quin- tessential type that you carry over your arm. A laundry basket lined with a pretty tablecloth can be just the ticket. After you remove the cloth (which, incidentally, you can use to sit on or display your food), line the basket with a colorful garbage bag and use it for refuse. You can remove the bag from the basket before (Yoinc , home and toss it, or keep it in the basket to take home dirty dishes and such. Just tie it up and there's no mess in your car. Other ways to pack a picnic are limited only to your imagination. If you have an SUV, take along a new, inexpensive plastic wheelbarrow or children's wagon.
