arrying homemade signs and
American and Palestinian
flags, about 60 Palestinian
supporters gathered in the
rain at three of the four corners of
Orchard Lake and 14 Mile roads on
Monday, April 8.
While some of the signs had peace-
ful messages, others compared the
Israelis to the Nazis and referred to
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon as
a "kids killer."
"The signage was not peaceful sig-
nage," said Allan Gale, assistant direc-
tor of the Jewish Community Council
of Metropolitan Detroit, who had
stopped by the intersection during the
demonstration. He said he saw a sign
with a swastika that compared Sharon
to Hitler.
Another sign read, "Save the
Nativity Church," referring to the his-
toric Bethlehem church that has been
the site of Israeli-Palestinian combat in
the wake of the Passover Massacre on
March 27.
"This made me think that this is
something they are going to use as an
issue," Gale said. "But actually, it's the
Palestinians who have made [the area
of the church] a battleground."
According to Police Chief William
Dwyer of Farmington Hills, the
demonstration ran from about 5:20 to
6:30 p.m. The event involved about
60 people and remained peaceful and
orderly, Dwyer said.
One demonstrator said her group
chose Oakland County in response to
pro-Israel street demonstrations held
there one week earlier.
Brad Urdan, who had participated
in those pro-Israel demonstrations,
stopped to talk to the Palestinian
demonstrators this week.
"A young lady I had a conversation
with was reasonable and civil," said
Urdan of West Bloomfield. "She said
her people shouldn't be terrorized. I
said the war started because the Israelis
are defending themselves.
