Rationalizing The Risk

Although these are effective ways to
-support Israel, the most dramatic and
direct way is to go there. Despite
increasing terrorist attacks, many local
Jews have decided to brave the risk to
visit the Jewish homeland as violence
grows.
"As someone who has traveled to
Israel more than 25 times, I've never
been concerned," said Robert Roth of
West Bloomfield, Dena Roth's father.
"But the situation has changed. It was-
n't an automatic decision."
Said Dena's mother, Kay Harris of
Huntington Woods: "We went
through some pretty intense soul-
searching. I was both afraid and angry
that there was this force keeping
Jewish kids from visiting their home-
land."
Dena, a student at
Cranbrook/Kingswood Academy in
Bloomfield Hills, was chosen to repre-
sent Ramah Camps in North America
on a mission sponsored by the North
American Alliance for Jewish Youth.
"I'm very proud of her, and I'm
extremely relieved that she's back,"
said Harris. "I'm thinking of going
myself now. Israel needs us in any way
we can help.
Dena said her initial impression was
that people were trying to function
normally, but it soon became apparent
the country is very empty of tourists,
especially the Old City of Jerusalem,
which was a popular destination.
"Many of the restaurants and most
of the shops there are closed," she said.
"It's very sad."
Rabbi Harold Loss of Temple Israel
in West Bloomfield traveled to Israel
in early March with a group from the
Central Conference of American
Rabbis. It was his second trip within a
short time, having visited a friend
whose son was killed in action with
the Israel Defense Forces at the end of
February.

Rabbi Marla Feldman, executive direc-
tor of the Michigan Board of Rabbis.

ISRAEL
AFTER 54 YEARS OF STATEHOOD

Israel is a democracy. There are no Arab democracies in the Middle East.

Israel, from its inception, has been an ingathering home for Jews of all races
and cultures. People from 100 countries, including non-Jews, are fellow citizens
in the State of Israel.

The Israel Defense Forces have overcome a series of extraordinary threats to
the State of Israel.

Israel is a scientific and technological powerhouse. Its medical discoveries and
valuable inventions benefit people everywhere.

Israel protects, and its tour guides explain, the holy places of all three
monotheistic religions with great respect.

Israel is a good neighbor to the world, offering its help and expertise
wherever disaster strikes.
