Top-Flight Effort

W hen Michael Hochheiser of Oak Park heard about the
Dec. 1-2 suicide bombings in Israel, he took it personally.
He turned to his wife and said, "By next Shabbos, I
want to be in Israel."
Hochheiser is a staunch supporter of Israel. His two sons, Yudi,
22, and Yossie, 18, are
studying there. He
wanted to help those
victimized by the ter-
rorist attacks.
So he scrambled to
book a flight through
his own travel agency,
Doneson Crown
Travel in Southfield.
He left on Wednesday
night, Dec. 5. By

He announced his
upcoming trip at
morning minyan at Yagdil Torah in Southfield, and again at after-
noon services at Agudah Israel. Both congregations responded with
cash donations totaling more than $400.
Hochheiser's wife, Bracha, a teacher at Yeshiva Beth Yehudah in
Southfield, joined the cause, collecting donations from fellow teach-
ers. She then went to the Old Navy outlet in Ferndale and bought
clothing for the victims.
After visiting his sons, Hochheiser spent Friday visiting survivors
of the terrorist attacks at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. On
Saturday, he visited friends aid observed Shabbat and, on Sunday, he
visited more victims at Shaarey Zedek Hospital.
"The families were so moved that people in America identified
with their plight," said Hochheiser. "That's one reason I went
to
show them that even though we're far away, our hearts and thoughts
are in Israel."
He can't forget the young bomb victim in a coma.
Unaware of his condition, Hochheiser began talking of the dona-
tions he had brought. The young man reached up as if to accept the
gift. Later that night, Hochheiser learned the young man had died.
"We all want to do things to help other people, but we're not
always able to pull it off the, way that he did," said Bracha
Hochheiser of her husband. D
