This Week For Openers Top-Flight Effort W hen Michael Hochheiser of Oak Park heard about the Dec. 1-2 suicide bombings in Israel, he took it personally. He turned to his wife and said, "By next Shabbos, I want to be in Israel." Hochheiser is a staunch supporter of Israel. His two sons, Yudi, 22, and Yossie, 18, are studying there. He wanted to help those victimized by the ter- rorist attacks. So he scrambled to book a flight through his own travel agency, Doneson Crown Travel in Southfield. He left on Wednesday night, Dec. 5. Both congregations responded with cash donations totaling more than $400. Hochheiser's wife, Bracha, a teacher at Yeshiva Beth Yehudah in Southfield, joined the cause, collecting donations from fellow teach- ers. She then went to the Old Navy outlet in Ferndale and bought clothing for the victims. After visiting his sons, Hochheiser spent Friday visiting survivors of the terrorist attacks at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. On Saturday, he visited friends aid observed Shabbat and, on Sunday, he visited more victims at Shaarey Zedek Hospital. "The families were so moved that people in America identified with their plight," said Hochheiser. "That's one reason I went to show them that even though we're far away, our hearts and thoughts are in Israel." He can't forget the young bomb victim in a coma. Unaware of his condition, Hochheiser began talking of the dona- tions he had brought. The young man reached up as if to accept the gift. Later that night, Hochheiser learned the young man had died. "We all want to do things to help other people, but we're not always able to pull it off the, way that he did," said Bracha Hochheiser of her husband.
