In the wake of the suicide bombings
that left 26 Israelis dead and 175
wounded on Dec. 1 and 2, the U.S.
Congress passed a resolution on Dec. 5
condemning the acts and insisting the
Palestinian Authority end the terrorist
campaign.
The resolution urged the PA to imme-
diately destroy the infrastructure of
Palestinian terrorist groups, arrest terror-
ists identified by Israel and either prose-
cute the terrorists and incarcerate those
convicted for a full sentence, or hand over
the terrorists to Israel for prosecution.
It also urged President George W.
Bush to take all necessary steps to ensure
that the PA takes action, "including, if
necessary, suspending all relations with
Yasser Arafat and the Palestinian
Authority
Reps. Joe Knollenberg (R-Bloomfield
Hills) and Sander Levin (D-Royal Oak)
were among 384 representatives who
voted for the resolution. Among the 11
who voted against was Rep. John
Dingell (D-Dearborn). Seventeen did
not vote.
Among the 21 who voted present
were Reps. John Conyers (D-Detroit)
and David Bonior (D-Mt. Clemens).
"I abhor the suicide bombings that
have taken place, and my heart goes out
to the victims and their families," said
Bonior, who is running for governor of
Michigan. "There's been an uncon-
scionable number of deaths on both
sides in this conflict and we need to sup-
port measures that will get both sides to
the table talking about peace again, not
casting blame on either side, which is
why I voted present."
The resolution was submitted to the
Senate and agreed to without amend-
ment by unanimous consent.

Danny Raskin can talk about the food
on his 25th anniversary cruise (Dec. 21,
page 72), but did he have Chanukah
latkes?
One of the four head waiters on Royal
Carribean's Majesty of the Seas out of
Miami is Jacob Biton of Israel. Jacob
tries to be an observant Jew as much as
his job will allow. He led brief Shabbat
services Friday and Saturday night (Dec.
14-15) for the 20-30 passengers who
joined him and arranged a special treat
after Havdalah but
on Saturday
before the first dinner seating in the
Majesty3 two dining rooms.
An Israeli steward brought in a heap-
ing tray of homemade potato latkes,
complete with applesauce and sour
cream, plus Israeli-sized sufkainlyot
(doughnuts).

Most Wonderful Man
Sportswriter and broadcaster Dick
Schaap's death last week touched many
Detroiters because of Schaap's involve-
ment with the Michigan Jewish Sports
Foundation.
For the past six years, Schaap served as
master of ceremonies for the founda-
tion's annual Hank Greenberg Memorial
Golf Tournament, which raises funds for
cancer research.
"He gave constantly, and every year he
became more involved," said Steven
Simons, foundation executive director.
Schaap and Greenberg's son, Steve —
involved with the
ESPN network and
formerly with Major
League Baseball —
helped bring in major
stars to the tourna-
ment..
'`We were lucky
enough to honor him
at the tournament
Dick Schaap
this year,
Simons said. He knew everybody,
and everybody loved him. He brought
the insight of knowing Hank Greenberg
to people who didn't know Greenberg."
The respect for Schaap was so wide-
spread, Simons said, the way to get the
tournament dinner starred each year
was just to have Dick start speaking.
Simons was asked by the Schaap fami-
ly to represent the foundation at a pri-
vate memorial service in New York in
January. The family has also designated
the foundatiuon as one of its charities of
choice for contributions in memory of
Schaap.
"It was always very special for me to
just sit and talk to him," recalled
Simons. He was far and away the
brightest man I ever met."
