her fresh foods has
been replaced with
36 feet of beautiful
display cases.
When Vineyards
opened 16 years ago,
makin , trays wasn't
even thou
b g ht of ...
And putting baskets together was very
little ... Today, both are big business
creations ... with more than 50,000
people a year eating from a Vineyards'
tray ... and more than 10,000 gift and
party baskets sold yearly.
Another enterprise, Nibbles & Nuts,
came in 1996 ... to become Nibbles &
Nuts at The Vineyards ... putting
together candy and nut trays and filling
Lucite boxes ... From five orders a day,
25 are now filled daily.
Upstairs, the Nibbles & Nuts ar The
Vineyards staff continually develop bet-
ter ways of improving the trays ... Ron
recently took over the East Side's Bits
N' Baskets ... acquiring the business
and taking his Vineyards into an even
greater dimension.
He loved the mandelbread, too, that
Ron purchased regularly from Evelyn
Bergman and her daughter, Arlene
Kingston ... from the recipe of Evelyn's
mother, Yetta Novitz ... So much so,
that he and Arlene have joined forces ...
and call their operation the Heavenly
Baking Co. ... making and wholesaling
Michigan cherry mandelbread ... now
also found in supermarkets.
Difficult to believe that Vineyards is
the same one that opened from a small,
almost burned-out little spot on
Northwestern Highway 16 years ago ...
to making his own bread, cookies, etc.,
too.
Envisioning the transformation only
brings a shake of the head ... But even
back then was a strange sense of there
not being too many things that would
keep Ron Asmar from a greater avenue
of success.
He was continually looking for new
products, new things to do, new worlds
to conquer ... and new friends to make.
Like I said, the road to Ron Asmar's
success has not been an easy one ... A
lot of hours ... A lot of constant hard
work ... and a lot of dreams ... has been
built into a flourishing business that is
still growing ... with no stop signs in
sight for the future.
"WHERE'S THE FOOD?" asked
some folks at the 17th annual induc-
tion dinner by Michigan Jewish Sports
Hall of Fame.
Something new had been added for
the first time ... Most of the vittles were
at stations in an outside, heated tent off
