BILL CARROLL
Special to the Jewish News

1 erry Seinfeld's unique
brand of "observational
humor" has turned
him into a sardonic
critic of pop culture and mass
behavior, and made him one of
the most popular comedians in
America.
He's gained that status as the
result of Seinfeld, his highly suc-
cessful television show that ran
for nine years on NBC. The
Jewish comic genius, who has
hilariously recited comedy
monologues about lint and cot-
ton balls, will bring his standup
act to Detroit's Fox Theatre for
three shows Friday and Saturday,
Oct. 5-6, all of them quick sell-
outs.

Jerry Seinfeld, performing at
Detroit's Fox Theatre; is part
of a rich Jewish tradition.

a new book about Jewish come-
dians to be published later this
month, author Lawrence J.
Epstein, professor of English at
Suffolk County (N.Y.)
Community College since 1974,
makes the point that Seinfeld
may have been prophesizing his
eventual success when he named
his TV show after himself, delib-
erately using his very Jewish-
sounding surname.
Instead of just calling it Jerry,
he and the network felt no need
to hide his Jewishness.
Indeed, not only does
Seinfeld, at 47, have talent,
determination and a desire for
perfection — he is a direct
descendant of the rich tradition
of Jewish comedy.

NY Jewish Roots

Seinfeld certainly comes from
the right place. "I was born in
Brooklyn and grew up in
Massapequa on Long Island," he
explains in his standup routine.
"It's an old Indian word meaning
`by the mall.'"
In real life, the son of Betty
and the late Kalman Seinfeld is
married to public-relations
executive Jessica Sklar, with
whom he has a daughter,
Sascha.
He was attracted to comedy
"The amoral perpetual adolescents of Seinfeld' not when, at age 8, he saw a come-
only found comfort in each other's company but dian on TV's Ed Sullivan
also believed their views were justified by the sober Show. He knew right then: He
realities of a cynical world" writes author Lawrence wanted to make people laugh.
He watched many hours of
Epstein in his new book, "The Haunted Smile."
