He's gained that status as the result of Seinfeld, his highly suc- cessful television show that ran for nine years on NBC. The Jewish comic genius, who has hilariously recited comedy monologues about lint and cot- ton balls, will bring his standup act to Detroit's Fox Theatre for three shows Friday and Saturday, Oct. 5-6, all of them quick sell- outs. Epstein, professor of English at Suffolk County (N.Y.) Community College since 1974, makes the point that Seinfeld may have been prophesizing his eventual success when he named his TV show after himself, delib- erately using his very Jewish- sounding surname. Instead of just calling it Jerry, he and the network felt no need to hide his Jewishness.
