IRENE RUBY, 85, former Detroiter of
San Jose, Calif, died July 12. For many
years, she and her husband operated
Michigan Wrestling Enterprises. She
was active in Michigan Democratic
Party politics and was an officer of the
American Jewish Congress.
She is survived by her sons and
daughters-in-law, Rob and Eileen Ruby
of Piedmont, Calif, and Allen and
Cynthia Ruby of Saratoga, Calif.;
grandchildren, Sarah, Daniel and
Michael Ruby; She was the beloved
wife of the late Bert Ruby; sister of the
late Edna Bale and the late Mortimer
Feder.

JEAN SEMP, 84, of New Zealand,
died Aug. 3. She resided most of her
life in the Jewish community of
Manchester, England, was a member of
the Central Shul and the Heaton Park
Shul and a member of the Jewish Blind
Society in Crumpsall, Manchester.
Mrs. Semp migrated to New
Zealand several years ago to spend her
final years with her family of grandchil-
dren and great-grandchildren in
Auckland and Napier, New Zealand,
and visited Michigan several times with
her late husband, attending services at
Congregation Beth Shalom where her
son, Reverend Sammy Semp is the ritu-
al director.
Mrs. Semp is survived by her sons
and daughters-in-law, Irving and
Sandra Semp of New Zealand, Rev.
Sammy and Gilah Semp of Southfield;
grandchildren, David Semp and partner
Jin, Michael and Rachel Semp, Peninah
Semp, Devorah Semp, Ari Moshe
Semp; great-grandchildren, Blake,
Daniel and Harrison Semp. She was the
beloved wife of the late Morris Semp;
loving daughter of the late Minnie and
the late Joseph Cohen; dear sister of the
late Lily Michael, Burt, Annie, Benny,
Jack and Ike.
Interment in New Zealand.

Congregation Beth Shalom Breakfast

MELVIN I. SHAPIRO, 62, of Lake
Orion, died Aug. 11.
He is survived by his beloved wife,
Lenore Shapiro; daughters and sons-in-
law, Lisa and Brian Boettcher of West

Bloomfield, Juli Rousseau of Las Vegas,
Nev., Beth and Eric Brown of
Clarkston; sons and daughter-in-law,
Larry and Andrea Mendelson of Las
Vegas, Michael Mendelson of New
York, N.Y.; sister and brother-in-law,
Ann and Sandy Porvin of West
Bloomfield; grandchildren, Sydney,
Jenna, Joel, Emily, Jake, Brandon,
Courtney and Josh. He was the dear son
of the late Hy and Ruth Shapiro.
Interment at the Hebrew Memorial

ESTHER STEINBERG, 101, of
Southfield, died Aug. 12.
She is survived by her sons and
daughters-in-law, Herman and Jean
Steinberg of Palo Alto, Calif, Rabbi
Nathaniel and Grace Steinberg of Loch
Sheldrake, N.Y.; daughter and son-in-
law, Diana and Ira Leventer of
Southfield; nine grandchildren.
Mrs. Steinberg was the beloved wife
of the late Harry Steinberg.

Bloomfield, died Aug. 10.
She is survived by her beloved hus-
