Nominations are being sought for
candidates for the third Benard L.
Maas Prize for Achievement in
Jewish Culture and
Continuity/Performing Arts, admin-
istered by the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit.
The Maas Foundation supports
education, the arts, cultural institu-
tions and Jewish organizations with
the well being of children and youth
a primary concern.
Consideration for awards will go to
working artists, scholars and educators
making a unique contribution to Jewish
continuity, through a performing arts
medium (music, theater, dance).
Prizes will be awarded for overall
excellence for a body of work and the
importance of its contribution to the
quality and continuity of Jewish life
in Michigan. The prize for individu-
als includes a cash award of $10,000.
In the category of organizations and
institutions, a certificate of recogni-
tion will be awarded.
Deadline for names of nominees is
June 29. Nomination packets are due

Maud Lyon
Slates Talk
Maud Lyon, executive director of
Detroit 300 Inc., will be one of the
speakers at the
annual meeting of
the Jewish
Historical Society
of Michigan 10:45
a.m. Sunday, June
24, at Temple
Beth El. She will
provide informa-
tiOn regarding
events celebrating
Maud Lyon
Detroit's 300th
birthday. The talk
will be followed by lunch.
Previously, Lyon was director of the
Detroit Historical Museum and was
appointed in 1996 by Mayor Dennis
Sarcher to chair the Tercentenary
EXploratory Committee, charged with
developing a plan for Detroit's tricen-
tennial.
The annual meeting will also include
a performance by Robert Grossman,
portraying Rabbi Leo M. Franklin.

JHAS Trains
Volunteers
Frail older adults need volunteers to
visit them, monitor their quality of
life and report back to the guardian-
ship staff of the Jewish Home and
Aging Services Guardianship
Program. Volunteer training sessions
will be held at Fleischman
Residence/Blumberg Plaza, 6710
West Maple, West Bloomfield.
The first session will be held 7-9
p.m. Monday, June 11. The topic
will be "The Role of the
Guardianship and the Guardianship
Volunteer."
The second session will be 7-9
p.m. Monday, June 18. The topic
will be "Quality of Life Issues in a
Healthcare Setting." Margot Parr,
executive director, JHAS, will discuss
monitoring standards of care for resi-
dents in care facilities.
The sessions are free of charge.
