Estate Of Edward Ravitz Gives
$5 Million To Detroit Jewry
The founder of one of the largest resi-
dential building companies in
Michigan will be remembered long
after his death, thanks to a $5 million
bequest that will benefit a variety of
programs of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit.
The gift from the estate of Edward
Ravitz, who died in April 1999, was
announced by Penny Blumenstein,
president of the Jewish Federation.
Blumenstein said that $1 million will
establish a permanent endowment fund
to benefit Federation's Annual
Campaign, and the remaining $4 mil-
lion will go toward Federation's general
fund.
Following his service in World War
II, Ravitz received training as a carpen-
ter in the Detroit area and began build-
ing homes in Oak Park. He founded
the Kalamazoo office of Edward Rose
and Sons in 1963. Through his leader-
ship, that office has grown from one
employee to more than 600.
Edward Rose and Sons is one of the
companies within Edward Rose and
Sons Building Enterprises, a privately
owned firm engaged in development,
construction and management of resi-
dential properties. The company is
headquartered in Farmington Hills,
with additional offices in Kalamazoo,
Flint and Indianapolis. The firm has
been engaged in residential construc-
tion since 1921 and has built 60,000
single-family and multifamily
dwellings.
For his service to the Apartment
Association of Michigan and to the
multifamily housing industry, Ravitz
earned the AAM Distinguished
Service Award in 1997. He was a vice
president of the Building Industry
Association of Southeastern Michigan
and the Apartment Association of
Michigan.
His family established the Edward
Ravitz Memorial Scholarship in
Construction Engineering at Western
Michigan University in 2000.
Ravitz, a recreational pilot, is sur-
vived by his wife, Gloria, to whom he
was married for almost 48 years; two
daughters, Donna Ravitz of San Rafael,
Calif, and Eleanor Zafron of
Hingham, Mass.; and four grandchil-
dren.
