The Greater Detroit Chapter of
Hadassah Doll Project was selected
by the state of Michigan for the
Michigan Week 2001 Volunteer lead-
ership Award in recognition of dedica-
tion to community service and many
hours of volunteer work.
Tracey Trotsky of Farmington Hills, a
fifth-grade teacher at Brick
Elementary in the Lincoln
Conscilidated School District, won
the Washtenaw County Sam's Club
contest for the teacher of the year. She
was awarded $500 toward the pur-
chase of school supplies.

Karen Alpiner of Franklin has been
appointed the new committee chair
of the Agency for Jewish Education's
Jewish Experiences for Families
(JEFF). She is the lay education
director at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek and is responsible for oversee-
ing the nursery school, religious
school, high school and youth pro-
grams as well as the Applebaum Life
and Learning Center. Alpiner is on
the boards of Camp Ramah, the
Jewish Theological Seminary of
America, and Alyn Pediatric Hospital
in Jerusalem. She is co-chair of the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit's Beit Midrash Program, is a
member of Shalom Detroit and has
been involved with Federation's
Alliance for Jewish Education _
Preschool Work Group.
Devra Wanetik, formerly of West
Bloomfield, was given a regional
award for spot reporting by the
Society of Professional Journalists. She
is an editorial assistant for the
Jerusalem Report in Israel. Ezra
Wanetik, of New York .City, has been
promoted to sergeant in the New
York Police Department Academy. He
works for the Jewish Theological
Seminary, where he manages the
donor records area. Both are the chil-
dren of Leonard and Ann Wanetik of
West Bloomfield.
Shelby Faye Kaufman, a junior at
West Bloomfield High School, quali-
fied Top Ten and
won four medals
in the category of
Retail
Merchandising
Associate Level at
the International
Career
Development
Shelby Kaufman Conference for
marketing stu-
dents, which was held in California.
Jeremy Shulman of West Bloomfield
received his juris doctor degree cum
laude from Boston University School
of Law.
Dr. David Weinberg of Toledo has
been awarded a Distinguished
Faculty fellowship by the board of
governors of Wayne State University.
He is the director of the Cohn-
Haddow Center for Judaic Studies at
WSU. Sandy Loeffler of West
Bloomfield, administrative assistant
at the Cohn-Haddow Center, was
presented an Exceptional Service
Award by the office .of the president
of WSU for her role on the commit-
tee that brought Israel's Shimon
Peres to the community last year.
David Saperstein of Huntington
Woods, an attorney with the Detroit
office of Garan Lucow Miller PC, has
had an article selected to be published
as the feature article in the Public -
Corporation Law Quarterly. Its title is
"Why There Are No Common-Law
Exceptions to Municipalities'
Governmental Immunity: A
Municipal Perspective."
